monophonic is meant for things with a single tone, like basslines. doesn't work so well with things like acoustic guitar, i find. polyphonic is generally a lot better.

PT reserves loads of RAM for itself when it starts up. I'm guessing they use it for disk caching.

On here it uses ~250Mb with no session loaded and minimum 400Mb when I do anything. It shouldn't...

Better filter algorithms eat more CPU power, and internal oversampling in plugins allows for much better circuit simulations but needs monstrous amounts of extra grunt.

i think i remember reading somewhere that the main vocal on the first strokes record is a u47, with the direct signal mixed in with the same signal re-amped through a tiny little vintage fender amp....

Just got my core 2 E6400 on Asrock 775Dual M/B with 2 x 512Mb 667Mhz DDR2 RAM up and running - I can confirm that it's damn fast and it seems to be pretty stable. Had to tweak the Bios to get it...

try recording with all your plugins disabled (not bypassed) - plugins in the master bus particularly will mess up your timing

Some of the Rode mics are really good, but you should also think about the Audio Technica mics - great all purpose mics (if a bit bright). Check out AT2020 or AT4040.
