Further explanation:

When a session "breaks" as I've described, the Minus key used on an individual midi track toggles between velocity view and notes view instead of notes view and clips view....

By the way, the key command as listed in the Pro Tools Shortcuts.pdf is:

Action:Toggle Track View on all tracks
Mac: Option+Minus (–) key (on computer keyboard)

I had pressed a few buttons on the Impulse including the Shift/Learn but Preview doesn't seem to be lit up and I've successfully shut off Preview mode without fixing the problem. Thank you for trying...

Additionally, loading Xpand2 or Vacuum or other factory instruments causes a beachball and a 50 - 60 second pause.

When I try to open Pro Tools the icon in the dock will bounce for about 20/30 seconds, then it stops bouncing and looks like it's failed to open, but then about a minute later it begins to open....

I have the same problem, but worse. I've reduced processors to 3 as recommended to no avail. I can't keep my Playback engine buffer any higher than 512 because latency becomes a problem above that....
