Despite the positive changes it still seems like a really temperamental resource hog.

I have already invested way more IT hours than music hours - which is why I gave up PT in the first place.

Firewire card is the ADS Pyro as recommended by Digi.
onboard FW is also disabled, not sure if it is VIA or not
no known JMicron drivers as suggested in the answerbase...

are you using a kensington mouse (or especially a trackball)? They are notoriously odd with kvm switches and may contribute to your problem, if so.

It sounds like you are trying to use the s/pdif out as an analog connection. Please be aware that it is a digital interconnection - which means that you can't plug it into something that takes 1/4"...

Pro Tools has a half-speed recording feature - if you hold down shift when you press ctrl-spacebar to record. Make sure you are not doing that accidentally...

alt-k toggles 'auto input monitor' on and off which lets you hear either the track input or what is already recorded on the track.

What he said but you should get an RCA-RCA video cable instead. It is important that it be 75ohms for s/pdif which audio cables aren't necessarily.

With the LM at least the same latency is incurred even if the plug-in is empty - i.e. with no emulation selected.
I'm not sure if the UAD works this way or if the different effects have different...
