Compatibility with old sessions might be one reason. It can be frustrating to load an older session on a newer system and find fundamental plugins and instruments aren't available, or in some cases...

It seems that TL space TDM pluging will convert to RTAS if you open them in PT8HD on a TDM system and on each instance use the TDM to RTAS selector function.

But if one opens a session in PTHD9...

URS DP Plugins (N and A Series) don't open in RTAS

After a large investment of time and money into trying to make a portable setup with PT9 it appears that TDM sessions which are littered with URS DP plugins won't open the RTAS version of the URS...

A little OT: NS10 substitute (w/more lows?)

It used to seem like there was enough lows (80 to 200 range) when monitoring NS10's in studio with them on the console and 8 feet of space behind them.

Probably a new computer with PT9HD will do what you want without the PCI-x cards IF:
all the plugins you are going to use on new or in old sessions have current RTAS equivavlents on intel/snow...
