For the benefit of others... the fix was to enable command focus mode. It's the A/Z icon on the right-hand side of the edit window. It's session dependent. More details:...

I have noticed actual distortion when recording with "Ignore" selected. Not on the actual track that is being recorded, but the mix itself.

My system would stop mid-take if I didn't have "Ignore"...
