Internal bus routing, signal intermittent. PT 12.4

So, I've been having this issue with PT 12.4 (OS-X Yosemite).

Every now and then, one of my aux tracks that is being fed by track outputs (rather than by a send from the tracks) will stop passing...

Re: How's 12.4 running for you?

In general with problems such as frequent freezes, crashes, or CPU overload errors, trashing preferences is a good place to start. I can't say if it would have helped you yesterday or not, but it's...

Re: Pro Tools 12.4 Advanced Meter Type Settings

I think it depends on which meter type you are using. I know the VENUE meters let you specify your own value for 0dB, some of the other ones do as well I think, but not all.

If it's a full scale...

Re: Meter Types Which Choose?

Expariment a bit, find what you like.

Here's what I like for metering:

VENUE Peak
Decay: 50dB in 2.0 sec
0dB = -20dBFS
Colour break high: 8 (-12dBFS)
Colour break low: -4 (-24dBFS)

Re: Stacking Aux Tracks - Best Practice Violation

It's not wrong or inadvisable. It's actually a pretty common approach to emulate the busses/subgrouping that you would find on an analogue console. PT is generally quite good at dealing with stacked...

Re: Stupid Track Color Question

As far as I know there is no way to change the default colours for each track type (although this wouldn't be a bad feature for 12.5).

But do take a look at the Track Presets thread elsewhere on...

Re: The Best Mix in the History of Rock and Roll

For system calibration (or ears to system calibration) I often go for The Music Never Stopped by the Grateful Dead (from the Blues for Allah album) mostly because I know -exactly- what it's supposed...

Re: Pre-Fader-Send and Pre-Plug-In routing

If I want to have a pre-plugin send, you can either do what Mesaone suggested with an aux track; or just duplicate the original track remove the plugins and use that as your send track.

You can...

Re: Trying to tell what effects are on this singer's voice?

Sounds like a doubled vocal, there is also a little bit of reverb.

Could be a doubler/ADT plugin of some sort, or it could be the singer doubling themselves, or it could be two singers singing...

Re: Pro Tools 12.4 - Track Freeze!

It's a virtual instrument, that can send separate outputs to the DAW. For example if you have a pattern in Addictive Drums and you want to process the kick and snare differently you can send them to...

Re: Suggestions on panning in a mix

Put guitar on one side, guitar reverb on the other side. This will allow you to pan the guitar off to one side without the other side seeming too empty.

It's sort of an old-school technique that...

Re: 12.3.1 - thoughts? Anyone on 12.3.1 yet care to report?

I had it quit unexpectedly on me a couple of times yesterday, granted I was running a pretty large session with lots of VIs and hadn't cleared the P-RAM after the install.

Initially I was not...

Re: What is good Workflow ?

Workflow in Pro-Tools is largely a matter of figuring out what works best for you.

There is no set standard because everybody has different needs and a one-size-fits-all workflow wouldn't work...

Re: PLAYLIST FOR MIDI: question

MIDI and Instrument tracks both handle playlists just like audio tracks. Pro-Tools is good that way. Aux inputs, VCAs and Master faders do not have playlists.

Although if we were able to use VCA...

Re: User-Default plugin presets a huge time saver.

Yeah, the "analog" noise that some of those plugins produce is pretty annoying, I turn that off in my presets too.

On my last preference trashing I noticed that all of the user presets were still...

Re: Can you make a muted track automatically unmute only when you solo it?

You need a PFL solo. This has been an HD only feature for some time, but as of version 12.3 it's in the standard version of the software as well. Look under Options > Solo Modes. You may have to...

Re: Drum Miking

Buy a drum key. They are cheap, like, under ten dollars cheap. There is no excuse for not owning at least one.

Practise tuning your drums. If you don't own your own drum kit, rent one for a few...

User-Default plugin presets a huge time saver.

Many plugins come with factory-default settings that are vastly different from any settings I would ever actually use. It is time consuming to open up a plugin and have to tweak the same controls...

Re: Standard for Color Coding Tracks?

Here are my colour picking guidelines:

1. Use non-ugly colours. You're going to be seeing a lot of them over the course of your project.

2. Be relatively consistent in what colours you use for...

Re: What is your suggestion for order of effects?

Also worth noting is that with regards to processing on the 2-bus (compression and limiting especially) less is often more. Many mastering engineers will advise that you send them mixes with no...

Re: What is your suggestion for order of effects?

There is no standard order for plugins. But here are a few things that I have learned over the years:

1. Gates/expanders tend to work better if inserted before a compressor/limiter rather than...

Re: How much processing power is enough for PT 12?

The minimum specs necessary to run PT 12 are listen on Avid's website, there's no real need to go over them again.

I recommend getting the most powerful system that is within your price range, you...

Re: MacBook Pro Retina Mid 2014 not qualified? Why??

I am running Pro-Tools Native 12.3.0 on a Core i7 2.2Ghz Mid 2014 MacBook Pro Retina, 11.2, running OS-X 10.10.0 and it works just fine for me so far.

I suppose I could be an outlier (a sample...
