It certainly used to be the case that a license purchased from Avid would be activated...

Yes, drums in particular - where you only need to tighten up timing that is already decent, and you absolutely must preserve audio integrity.

Hold down the Shift key when double clicking on the session. This will open the session with all plugins inactive. See if that plays. That way you will know if the freeze is caused by a plugin.

Unfortunately it doesn't work in the foreground.
