I appreciate that. My friendly, local Digi dealer offered to set me up with the latest version (PT 8.x). Is it too new? Reliability is MUCH more important to me than bells & whistles.

I had a similar issue. It started by importing tracks from another session. The imported tracks carried their own mute breakpoints with them. A DUC post by jeremyroberts provided the solution.
