For me, the big difference was flexibility. Do I want to be tied in to Digi HW and PT or do I keep options "open" for other DAWs (that could be used in concert with or as an alternate to a PT setup)....

Maybe this response is due to a half-baked understanding of your problem. I believe PT 7.4.2 has a "Conform to tempo" option for Audio tracks that should set the track/track selection to the tempo...
