If you are just clearing selected the bits you are throwing away are still in your hard drive. You could delete, but you still have to hold down the enter or return button. shift-control-u, ...

You can also use peak v2.5 or 2.6 to import the 16 bit audio aiff file and the "save as" a 24 bit aiff/sd2 for your 24 bit sessions.

I disengaged the link timeline/edit button on my rig to see if it would give the same result. At first I had a error-1309, but at the second attempt it bounced...

This is the strangest thing I've seen yet. This is on a friends rig by the way.

When he bounces to disk, the bounce clock that counts down backwards reads 800+ minutes for a 3-4 minute song. ...

I swapped it out (removable) withthe 18 gig which backs up fine.

I reinitialized, restored the files, ran Nortons and all was good. I backed up to Retrospect and the same thing happened. ...
