Then there's my theory that the new 8-core macs are so fast that digi is worried they will undercut their HD system sales

First of all, in the future if you know that you're going to have a significantly louder section and you don't mind doing punch-in's, you could record all of the quieter sections with more gain on...

A more precise way to shift your audio back is to use opt+H . You'll get a dialogue box that will let you type in the exact number of samples. Much faster than doing it by hand.
