Try this:
Go to 'Pro Tools.app', then 'command I' (get info) and click on 'Open in Low Resolution'.
Any better?

Do I have to un-install PT10 before updating the OS?
I am not planing to use PT10 on 10.9.

I thought a new, separate PT10/OS10.8 disc would be the easiest and safest...

Ok, I have got OS10.8.5 and PT 10.3.9 on 'disc one' now. No problem.
I've ordered a new drive, which should arrive in the next couple of days.
That's 'disc two'.
I want to update 'disc one' to...

I want to have two OSs on two separate discs.
One to run PT10 exclusively, on 10.8.5
and update the other disc to Mavericks.

Does your Mbox3 work at 48 and 96 KHz?

Mine doesn't.
I create a new session at 48 or 96 and PT simply refuses to work.
Displays a -6104 error-message.
Switching to the built-in output and everything is ok.
No external sync via spdif...
