I realize I'm a little late to this party but if you're in PT 11/12, selecting:

View>Clip> Clip Gain Info

Reveals the little slider and numeric for gains on the bottom left of each clip region.

Just an Update. I was able to fix it (or at least I think so - let's see...), but increasing the disk disk playback cache to 2GB.

That document is immensely helpful! Both styles of routing to the sub appear to be valid ways to do this. They call my style "direct to sub" mixing.
