Re: Digidesign engineering\'s response to the HD "bass-lite" criticism is ....

I know I have nothing to add to this conversation but I'd just like to make 3 points:

1. Mixerman's original point can't be contested--he heard a difference. Nor has it yet been confirmed by...

Yorik,
touche'

truth is, I relate to Lee, that's probably why he pisses me off.

Now back to making music.

Re: Quicktime 5 kills OMS? (PTLE 5.0.1)

Thanks, dk and joe. I'd been avoiding the dual-boot but I guess it's time...

The problem remains though. images/icons/frown.gif

Quicktime 5 kills OMS? (PTLE 5.0.1)

I've got a pretty stable setup on my G4 (OS 9.1) with PTLE 5.0.1 and Quicktime 4.1.2. Problem is, I can't open .mpeg files encoded with recent codecs. So I installed Quicktime 5.0. Sure enough,...

Re: Opinion On my Mixes

I second the comment about the guitars & bass masking the drums. Solo the drums and play around with compression & eq until you get a good thump from the kick and snap from the snare. Then add the...

Re: Help! recording vocals with 001

What's wrong with your vocals now? If you can tell us that, you're halfway there, and someone can point you in the right direction.

Re: can I fling selected area from track to track in LE?

Wow, that would save me SO MUCH time and hassle... Brent, is there any way we could get this feature in a future PTLE?

Re: setting record levels into ProTools with the intent of mixing in ProTools

To me, the question is, which is more noticeable, the noise introduced by the calculations taking place when the faders are lowered, or the noise floor of the original A/D conversion?

I always...

Re: DeEssing basics....someone please help me!!!!!

Basically, a de-esser uses a narrow frequency band (the band where the ess sound is loudest) to trigger a compressor.

To learn how to use it, maybe the easiest way is to play with an EQ plugin...

Re: Can I do this?

Should work fine, as long as you remember to start up the mac with pc exchange control panel and extensions on. It will mount on the mac as a PC drive.

Re: sidechaining a gate?

just to add to what Simon correctly said, you can use any sound to trigger the gate. It doesn't need to be the same length as the final beeps, because you can adjust the gate to stay open as long as...

Re: audioble clicks and ticks all the time !! SOS !!

Jaleo is right. By the same token, if you must make the edit at a specific point (regardless of the zero-crossings), you can fade each end of the section to zero. Make the fade very short.

Re: Vocal Distortion

the key to metallic, sharp distortion is the odd harmonics. Even harmonics give a more fat/smooth sound. (Clarinet: lots of even harmonics; trumpet: lots of odd harmonics.)

Usually a "metal"...

Re: Help my cd burner!!!

The problem is the USB bus--it's too slow. Technically it should work at 4x, but if anything else is happening at the time... the buffer runs out. Get a SCSI or Firewire burner, they go up to 16x...

Re: Mini disc recorders for field recordings

The Aiwa minidiscs have a better manual level control than the Sonys. On my sony, you have to rec-pause, then adjust the level--kind of annoying but not the end of the world. Check out the JVC...

Re: Fastest G4 a 733Mhz?

Even with a conservative estimate, the dual 533 will be as fast as the single 733 for many tasks under OS X. It might be a better idea down the road to get a dual, assuming Digi will support OS X.

Re: Mini disc recorders for field recordings

The sony ECM-717 clip-on mic is cheap and tiny, with pretty good stereo imaging. It draws power from the mic input of my sony md r-37. (I got both for $150--I'm on a budget, but the pricier models...

Re: no more inarticulate bass

From my (limited) experience, when boosting the mids on a bass track, you have to duck other things out of the way (prob. the guitars will need a mid cut). If there's not enough high end on the...

Re: Can a dedicated recording drive be too big, thus slower than the specs?

Re: 16 bit or 24 bit Recording?

24-bit sounds much better. It doesn't really make sense to talk about headroom in digital - 0 db is always 0 db. What you get is a better signal to noise ratio (floor room?) and a finer...

Go ahead and compress the files (stuffit). Not only will it make the transfer simpler (1 file vs. 5), but you can also squeeze the file size down without losing audio data. File compression formats...
