That got me to the answer (I think) I plugged the monitors into the main 1 & 2 outs. With no volume control even though the noise meter plugin on the track was showing -8 Db the clip light lit up on...

Additional information:

The distortion doesn't seem to be appearing in playback, so maybe it's a software issue regarding headroom of the digital audio signal while recording and monitoring?
