TBH I can't recall ever reading that recommendation about using both AC Cable + FW...

Unfortunately, I have to pay for telephone advice now (my 1 year warranty and free advice expired in May 08),...

No I don't - the MBox is bus powered only, with an FW foing into the port on the back of my Imac.

Nice thought though. It's got to be something simple, but I can't see why it would have worked so...
