virtual iLok USB key

I read this FAQ at the Soundtoys website:

Quote:

You can activate your license on up to two devices at a time. A "device" is either a computer (which can host a virtual iLok USB key), or an actual physical iLok USB key. The iLok USB key would need to be associated with your iLok account to which you made the Soundtoys purchase.
Can this be done with PT12 and any other software or plugin using iLok (Slate, Sonnox).

No, not for PT so far.

On iLok account you can see for each license three symbols - iLok1, iLok2 and computersymbol - and those hilighted can be used to store license.

So it's up to each vendor to decide what is allowed.

Interesting, how well and reliable is this for you? Any drawbacks?

I too am interested in how this is working for you.

Does this essentially mean I could run it on one of my macs and then use the studio Mac or laptop etc at any point to access the ilok? I don't mean simultaneously, I just mean without having to unplug and move the physical dongle around.

Not yet. There is some software that uses the Steinberg dongle that can use either the hardware dongle or a virtual one. The Vienna stuff though mandates the use of the hardware dongle.

Interesting but I have to wonder how long before Avid puts out a cease and desist order like they did for the SugarBytes aax wrapper?

Just think of it as a virtual USB Hub. You can everything like you could do with a hub... You can't plug two USB Host in one Hub, so you can't use two hists with this server.

But you can use whatever computer to access the ilok (you have to reset the USB port of the host first - means reboot the Raspberry)

Mmm. It's USB and it stays USB. Nothing Avid could mess with... why would they? There are professional solutions for Dongle Servers as far as I know...

Comes in very handy if you forgot to bring your dongle to a studio and you can simply connect to your ilok via a virtual USB port.

The connection protocol means nothing here. Avid doesn't need to have access to the dongle itself. In the wrapper case Avid sent a cease and desist order direct to the software developer and said developer could no longer offer the wrapper. If you didn't bring your dongle - too freakin' bad. Poor planning on your part.

I think the thread was about alternative iLok usage and not about my work planning or AVID sending cease and desist orders...

So back to the original question. I'm using my iLok and a USB Stick with Waves licenses everyday with virtualhere on a Raspberry Pi as a "USB hub over IP" and it works very reliable.

I only experienced problems in network environments that block IPsec VPN access. But that's usually only the case in public Wifi.
