ProTools 8.0.4 doesn't send MIDI to Yamaha S90 ES; midi out ports [Emulated]
I am attempting to send MIDI data from several MIDI tracks to an S90 ES attached to my computer via USB. The S90 has its MIDI settings set to use "USB" for "MIDI IN/OUT", and has its recieve channel set to "OMNI". It is in "MULTI/SEQ PLAY" mode, for multi-channel receiving. Finale 2010 is able to send signals successfully.
Pro Tools 8.0.4 can receive signals from the instrument; I can record to the MIDI tracks in question. However, when I try to play them, I get nothing. Here is a screenshot illustrating how I have set the channel output. I notice that all of the MIDI output channels have "[Emulated]" by them. I can't find any information, in the Reference, on Google or on these forums, about what that might mean. This guy had a similar problem, but his solution won't work for me; I need the MIDI to go to the real synth, not a soft synth. This guy fixed his similar problem by repairing Pro Tools repeatedly. I hope that is not the solution. From my profile: Windows 7 Pro 64-bit M-Audio FireWire 1814 Yamaha S90 ES Pro Tools 8.0.4 Yamaha USB-MIDI Driver 3.0.4 M-Audio driver version 5.10.0.5058 Very much hope someone out there can help. Re: ProTools 8.0.4 doesn't send MIDI to Yamaha S90 ES; midi out ports [Emulated]
Bump. I'd really apreciate some help with this. Has anyone else solved this problem? Seems to have started in 8+.

Re: ProTools 8.0.4 doesn't send MIDI to Yamaha S90 ES; midi out ports [Emulated]
Five months later, I have another project to work on, and still no resolution. Lovely.
I will try a clean re-install of ProTools. |
Re: ProTools 8.0.4 doesn't send MIDI to Yamaha S90 ES; midi out ports [Emulated]
I performed a full, clean re-install for ProTool 8.0.4, M-Audio's FireWire 1814 driver, and, just for kicks, the Yamaha USB -MIDI driver. Exact same behavior.
Is MIDI output intended to fail silently in ProTools 8? Is this an undocumented "feature"? |
Re: ProTools 8.0.4 doesn't send MIDI to Yamaha S90 ES; midi out ports [Emulated]
And the answer: run Pro Tools as administrator in Windows 7. MIDI now works fine.

Re: ProTools 8.0.4 doesn't send MIDI to Yamaha S90 ES; midi out ports [Emulated]
I just joined to this forum, after I got all my gear in Christmas, I have had a few questions, but looks like simple solutions like yours is not answered. Would expect at least some kind of answers.... I'll take my stuff back to the store. (Its within 30 days)
Over Grand worth of sales going back to Avid, M-Audio or whoever they are... disappointed, I'll be using FL-Studio and other softwares, with my gear. Not worth buying m-audio or avid products... just because everything is just so confusing....merger did not really go smoothly with this ;( |
Re: ProTools 8.0.4 doesn't send MIDI to Yamaha S90 ES; midi out ports [Emulated]
Ossi - if your problem is anything like the one I describe here, the solution should be effective. Sounds like you have some other issues too; I'm sorry you've not been able to find solutions. I admit, I actually paid Avid $40 for a phone support incident to get the solution to this one. Their website claims that some products come with free incidents; perhaps you have a few lying around that you could use to get answers?
The community here seems to be pretty quiescent, unfortunately. |
Re: ProTools 8.0.4 doesn't send MIDI to Yamaha S90 ES; midi out ports [Emulated]
Much appreciate you coming back with that solution bbirney. just spent 4hours trying everything. Run as admin was indeed the answer.

Re: ProTools 8.0.4 doesn't send MIDI to Yamaha S90 ES; midi out ports [Emulated]
Starting with Windows 7 and continuing thru current Windows, its standard practice to
A-right-click installer and choose Run as Admin for all programs B-Run PT as Admin Sorry you both missed that one and had to struggle, but glad you have it sorted:o The other thing that trips up many newbies is midi routing as its not exactly obvious or intuitive. I'm not sure about Macs, but for Windows users, the Midi Studio menu is where it all happens(and many newbies are not aware of that setup):o |
