UAD Console & Protools BEST PRACTICES

I switched to an Apollo interface this month and am enjoying the UA Console software and the UA Plug Ins. I don't have any "problems" to fix, I'm just trying to figure out the BEST WORKFLOW.

Such as... when to Turn "on" ProTools "Low Latency Monitoring" and really utilize CONSOLE; the UA plugins, virtual tracks, aux tracks, cue tracks,
And then when to commit fully back to the full ProTools environment, to turn off "Low Latency Monitoring" etc.

How and when to use UA Plugins for mixing- or not. Virtual instruments, real instruments....

Obviously UAD loves selling plugins, but I've already invested in Avid/iZoTope/Waves/Native Instr/ and so much more, so I'm trying to imagine the optimal workflow of when to maximize the functionality of the UAD Console software and plugins and when to not. (or how many of them should I invest in?)

When to "print" and when to not.

For me, I do a mix of electronic and acoustic, so I have plenty of virtual tracks but also plenty of real guitars and multi-part vocals etc. Just wondering what works for people who have established a trusted workflow.

ME: Windows/Apollo Twin USB/Ni Maschine Studio, Kontrol, Komplete Ultimate, other keys, guitars, bass, percussion, vocals etc...

While tracking
Use UA console for zero latency.

After all tracking is done, run the bufffer up and utilize PT to monitor, sans LLM. It wouldn't be needed in your setup- imho

I always printed my tracks with effects, even the aux track in the console...running the reverbs.....personal pref, but I did. This way you will free up resources for later on....

In My Honest Opinion. -This is what you need at a minimum for UA Plugs.

1176 Collection - Must have, great sounding Desert island plugins

A Colored EQ - which one now that is debatable. (Neve 88rs/Pultec/Neve1073) I would say 88rs but you like what you like.

Top Shelf Reverb - For my taste I like the Lexicon 224

I would also go with the LA-2A, as another colored compressor/limiter

Sure they have more, but at a minimum this is what makes UA's DSP shine. And everything else they offer can be done elsewhere for cheaper. But these few are really worth the money. imho.

Thank you Daniel.

I appreciate the thoughts.
Sounds like LLM for recording. It's tempting to want to use Console and plugins to save on Computer processing, but LLM complicates things in that scenario.

My set-up
Latest PT, W7 SSD Drive, Maschine Studio & NI, W10, Many Plugins and other tools including Melodyne Studio, Ozone, Abelton, Studio One, UA interface

No, you can get other plugs from other vendors that do what you need to do......

I personally don't need a delay from UA, nor a Guitar sim....and you can get by without missing them and this is not even mentioning about Plugin Alliance's wonderful EQ v3 (which I have natively) also sonnox limiter v2 which I also have natively.

Guys .
I have a question, in low latency mode & monitoring through cans off the console cue sends. When dropping in on a take, is there a way to NOT here the input signal prior to dropping in?

Nothing other than a manual mute.

Hi Drew . .
Yes, I'm seeing that is the malarkey . .
I think I'm gonna set it up like this guy Claborn;

That is truly horibble workflow!

Obviously UA want to sell Apollos but it would make a lot more money off me if it sold HDX version of those wonderful plug-ins even with the usual punitive "HD Tax" applied.

I've toyed with going native with Apollo because I like UAD plug-ins so much but if you "mix as you go" like me, best practice seems to be a horribly, clunky compromise. On the other hand, I'm having to run a lot of plug-ins natively with HDX because there are no DSP versions and as a result, I often get crappy latency.

Maybe it's just me but the bar for state-of-the-art has seriously lowered in recent years.
