Protools Owners: Beware of Newegg!

This could effect lots of you Protools users out there! - Beware of Newegg!

They just gave out their customers purchase history to the state of CT and now CT is telling people that they owe sales tax for purchases 5 years ago through now!!! I just got a bill from the state of CT for not only 4 years of tax, but also interest & a penalty fee!!

Newegg does not have a business in CT, so this is just a scam by our CT government...... and Newegg should not be giving ANYONE my info.
BEWARE, if this happens one time, it will set a presedence for all states to go get back taxes from everybody!!

There are many people already banding up to challenge this from both Newegg as well as CT State.

BOYCOTT NEWEGG or you may be next! - AND PLEASE SHARE THIS INFO!

Unfortunately I can confirm from experience that this is a true story. Newegg now on my "don't do business with" list.

Peter:
Thanks for the heads-up on this. I was putting together a list of computer stuff I need and looking at Newegg and a couple of other vendors. Sucks they did this.

For what it's worth many states have what's called a 'use tax' where residents are supposed to pay a tax (usually the sales tax of the state of the purchaser) on goods purchased from outside the state. Unless said states have reciprocal agreements on sales tax. This is the first time I've heard of this being assessed retroactively.

edit for additional: OWC charges sales tax so purchasers from them are okay. Sweetwater does not charge sales tax.

Can you imagine what would happen if Sweetwater does the same thing! This is a test to see if the states & companies can get away with it........If this goes uncontested, we will all be seeing LOTS OF TAX BILLS FROM ALL OUR INTERNET PURCHASES.
And what about Amazon?......Hmmmm?

While is crappy and inexcusable that they did this and that it's retroactive, get used to it moving fwd. It's the only way states will make up the missed tax rev as retail moves almost completely online.

Amazon built a HUGE distro center in Maryland a few years ago and we've all been paying tax ever since.

Amazon charges tax in every state that has a sales tax. The only variable is if the purchase is a 3rd party seller on Amazon, you may not have to. It makes them a bit less attractive and why I use Newegg most of the time. I could not even begin to count the amount of purchases I make with Newegg a year.

I don't see how CT will get away with this uncontested. This could (and will) literally bankrupt small businesses. I would assume they will settle for a portion and in most cases, a payment structure will be setup.

That is a more recent development.

Prior to them building the distro center in my state (2015?), I never paid sales tax.

Same thing with B&H in NYC - when they moved their warehousing to NJ I started having to pay sales tax. Before - no sales tax.

And Amazon built a fulfillment center here in NJ a year or two back and have been paying sales tax for them as well.
