Stop MIDI notes from overwriting other MIDI Notes?
This may be an amateur question, but I'm not used to using midi directly in pro tools. Why is it that after laying down a sequence (lets say on an instrument track with superior drummer plugged in) if I try to say, add a hi-hat over a kick that's in place as soon as I paste the note the kick will be removed? How do I turn this off?

Try enabling MIDI merge

You say you are pasting? That will erase what's already there. Instead of paste use merge - (option+m)

try creating another midi track and route it to the instrument that way your editing a different clip but still routed to the instrument. its better that way anyway just for arrangement purposes. in my opinion.

Don't paste use the pencil and write in the notes - or use MIDI merge. MIDI merge is terrific as long as you keep track of what you're doing. I use it all the time because for some reason Pro Tools won't record the first or last notes sometimes when I define a block to record in. But that's recording live over the existing drum or whatever track.
That's what I recommend. Use MIDI merge and just record the separate drum parts in separate passes. Hope this makes sense |
