I don't have the boot and progress screen anymore since upgrading to Mojave.

Thanks. What about during the update to mojave? Did it show progress? Or black screen and you just hoped it was doing something?

Check this bad boy out comparable with 2019 Mac Pro and old 5,1 cMP. You can raid 0 three NVME 970 pros for over 5000 MB/s and have a forth one for a boot drive, overkill for pro tools but awesome for video editing. The cheaper Evos will need a firmaware update to work with the card.

You can buy flashed 580x from Macvidcards or send them yours to flash but it has to be a certain model. Long live the vintage cheese grader!

I would not want to "RAID" these SSDs. I'd suggest leaving NVMe SSDs in nice JBOD configurations, simple to understand and easy to use.

This card is a PCIe 3 card, and the claimed performance is running at PCIe 3. if you run it in a Mac Pro Cheesegrater you only get PCIe 2 speeds. So significantly slower than claimed. (I don't think this card lets you say run only two PCIe M.2 cards and switch sat PCIe 2 x 16 up to 2 x M.2 at PCIe 3 x 4, if it can their documentation does not say so).

I would be instead running a switched PCIe adapter card that converts a PCIe 2 x 8 slot into a PCIe 3 x 4 M.2 SSD. e.g. see http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/feedback/...ro_Review.html and https://forums.macrumors.com/threads...-ahci.2146725/

I love Sonnet stuff, but that cooling fan looks a bit wimpy, I'd love to see a good review of this card including thermal performance.

Thanks, that sounds about right. Do you know of any such adapters that work in a 2012 MacPro?

Oops sorry forgot to reply earlier. The card that gets almost all the attention is http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/feedback/...ro_Review.html and see all the info at https://forums.macrumors.com/threads...e-ahci.2146725

As I said probably overkill to raid 0 for pro tools but great for video work, the point was to show the speeds you can get in the older Mac Pro 5,1 there is no point in raiding 4 drives as it will be limited by the PCIe bus speed. Check out barefeats tested benchmarks. https://barefeats.com/sonnet-m2-4x4-pcie-card.html

Yes but my point was if you want performance in a Mac Pro Cheesegrater classic look for a switched adapter card that does the PCIe 2 to PCIe3 lane aggregation. I don't think that Sonnet card does that. The card I link to above does.

If you are looking at a modern PC or new Mac Pro Cheesegrater with PCIe 3 slots then there are many more adapter choices out there, including this Sonnet card (and if you want 4 x M.2 drives then it's likely a good choice).

All these upgrades has me wondering - can the power supply handle the load? I don't know how much Apple overdesigns their supplies. For that matter how about cooling? I don't have a machine room to put my 2012 cheesegrater in.

A Samsung 970 Evo draws ~6W-10W max. @ 3.3 V and usually a lot lower than that. So y'all got heaps of power to drive that.

Thermal throttling, you want to pay attention to. These are not drives you leave bare on an adapter board with no dedicated cooling fan. You need heatsinks or dedicated fans or both if they are working hard. (and a reminder that many of the drives we use don't work too hard all the time... only occasionally).
