tuning acoustic guitar with eleven rack
Can you tune an acoustic guitar with eleven rack's tuner using a microphone? The tuner works great if I use a guitar's pickup, but the tuner shows no signal when the guitar is played through a mic with the pickup cable unplugged. My eleven rack seems to record to a PT stereo track just fine. I tried the tuner in stand alone mode and through PT interface.
Using PT 10.3.6 on windows 7. 11 rack has latest firmware update (1.1.6, I think). I'm probably doing something simple wrong. Thanks, John |

You can, but I'm not sure about how accurate it is when using a mic as I've never done it that way.
All you need to do is change the RIG INPUT to MIC, right now you probably have it on GUITAR. Also 2.0.1 is the latest Firmware. 1.1.6 is the latest DRIVER version for Windows You also mentioned you are on 10.3.6, there is an update available for Pro Tools 10.3.7 http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/d...-3-7-Downloads (download at bottom of page) |

Benoni,
Thanks for the reply. You are quite riight, changing the rig input to mic did the trick. By the way, the tuner seems to do a good job with an acoustic guitar this way, very stable signal. Thanks again, John |
Re: tuning acoustic guitar with eleven rack
There's also a very accurate tuner plugin that comes free with Protools called "TL Intune". You might find it easier to use for your acoustic so you don't have to switch the Rig input back and forth. Just insert it on the track you're recording your acoustic to. You might even use it in your electric as well. It may be even more accurate than the 11R's built in tuner.

The RIG INPUT setting is an important one to remember and one of the first things you should check when you are not getting the correct signal. For example, I had a short freak out moment once when I plugged in to my 11R and no sound come out! I adjusted all the different VOL settings, made sure my IO was correct, defaulted the IO, turn the rack OFF and back ON, nothing..... Then I finally remembered I had done some re-amping:D All I needed to do was switch the RIG INPUT from REAMP to GUITAR - and I know this has happened to others as well. There are so many possible internal settings in the Eleven Rack that it is really a good idea to familiarize yourself with them, when you get time, scan through the .pdf manual, you will be glad you did. Enjoy. |

I've even done it again once or twice since, but now I immediately know where the loose connection occurs....it's between my ears. :D |

Re: tuning acoustic guitar with eleven rack
Something I run into when trying to tune an acoustic through any tuner (I usually use a very expensive Peterson StroboTuner and not one of the cheaper ones) is ambient noise getting into the mic and causing the strobe to bounce all over the place. I found that a good hypercardioid mic up closer than I'd normally mic an acoustic to help. Usually one of my Neumann TLM103's or an AKG C414 with the right pattern selected.
Just be thankful you don't have to make fine adjustments for intonation on an acoustic like on an electric using a mic :D |
