Upgrade opinions needed

I'm finding my current P3 1ghz rig to be a bit sluggish these days for PT. Reluctantly I'm considering upgrading to a p4 or AMD... I was hoping some of you may offer some suggestions. My goal is to be able to run 32 tracks, and whatever plugins without any cpu errors etc.. if that's possible. Basically I'm looking into a new mobo, cpu, and ram... hoping to stay under $400. Any ideas?

I think you should be able to work with ptle 5.3.1. I had a pIII 600 Mhz, and it worked alright, but a bit too slow for my taste. But i DID install winxp on it, and i DID install ptle 5.3.1 on it, and it worked. The 32 track playback isnt the problem. The problem is with plugins. They realy take the juice away.....

Replace your mobo, processor&Fan, and maybe your RAM. I was able to update to an athlonXP 1700+ and 256 MB ram for just under 300 euro's. I think you should be able to do that for less. Take a look at the "ptle pc for under $800" to take a nice pick of components.

Asus 266E, XP1800+, 512K DDR $438.00 at a local vendor here, you can mail order it cheaper. The 333 is a bit more.

I use the 266E and it works great for me...
