Cores and cpu load

after a bit of trial and error, ive noticed that choosing 4 cores in pt instead of 16 cores (in the playback engine pref) i get a lower cpu load % on the system window.

Q: how many cores should be selected on a mac quad to get the best outcome? (lowest cpu load)

also,
Q: at what % of cpu native load would one expect a system to grind to a halt?

ill be doing some more testing to find "that perfect setting" ;-)

Re: Cores and cpu load

Usual wisdom is to use one less core than what you have so for a dual quad core with hyperthreading turned on that would be 15 as a max.

Re: Cores and cpu load

hey music,
i noticed that when i use most of the cores, the % of cpu load goes up...
i would think the % would go down ...

any comments on max % cpu load before playback/record stopage?

thanks!

That's why I said 'usual wisdom' as it's weird reading through the forum here as you'll see people that have less cpu load going with number of cores minus one and some have less cpu load going with lower numbers. It's one of those fine-tuning things where people have to find what works best in their particular setup.
