Video playback not playing right!

Hello,

I've read a lot about video engine problems but don't think I've read about this particular one.
I'm (sound) editing an animation movie.
Yesterday, everything was fine. Today, I've received a new version of the video with slight changes.
Going through the session to adjust editing to the new picture, I notice a scene were I'm not in sync. I stop and compare (frame by frame) the old picture with the new one and... no difference!
I replay the same part with the very same new video file and, this time, everything is just fine...
This has happened several times.
Not easy to work when you're not even sure that playback is correct!

My first guess is that it might be due to the fact that two video files are present in the session (exact same format though) but that has never been a problem in the past!

Am I the only one to experience this bug??

Thanks for any clue...

Make sure both videos are the same codec and frame rate. PT chokes sometimes if multiple videos in the edit window are too different from each other.

If you're still stuck, remove all video media from the session, close, re-open and then load only the new video and use Quicktime Pro in the background for your frame comparisons. Make sense?

As said before, both videos are the same format. H264 seems to cause problem under PT12 (used to work fine under PT10).
I guess I'll convert to ProRes from now on.

H264 and your computer choking is your problem - as it often is in these posts.

H264 needs to calculate differences between key frames (real frames) to work out what to display on non key frames (this is how it keeps file size small) and why it is ****e for accurate playback. When your computer is busy, this performance drops off. Convert the videos to DNxHD36 and move on.

H264 is a codec for small file size and transfer only, not for playback.

I know all of this, thank you.
But then, why does it work well under PT10?
Sorry for the post, this is going nowhere, forget it.

Re: Video playback not playing right!

Because the AVE is not optimised to play h264. PT10 pretty much relied on QT engine and was god awful at sync unless you used a mojo and for rock solid awesome never drift sync, MXF media.
You are comparing apples to oranges with PT10 and PT12

OK, thanks.

i have had this issue with Pro Res. It isnt the fix. I literally find myself double checking 2 pips all the time in PT12!

Pro Res video running through AJA T Tap. Sometimes randomly so out of sync and then ok a few plays or restart later.

Has made me consider external video slaving for client attended sessions!

Never seen that before. Don't often use P-Res
