From 9 upgrade ?
What I've noticed on my AVID account to upgrade from 9 to 2018 is the same price as if someone is buying the program for the first time, that's ODD.
I would imagine a better price point considering someone has been upgrading from 7 then 8, then cross grading you would be offered a better deal ? |
Re: From 9 upgrade ?
A new perpetual license is $599US. An upgrade from 9/higher is $299US.

Thanks for chiming in jeffro. Yeah I see that, what I was wondering about is that a person buying PT for the first also can get it for $299. I was hoping a better price point for a loyal repeat buyer. I started at 7, then 8, then cross graded to 9. Although absolutely not complaining, but was merely wondering why a new would get the same deal and a repeat buyer ? Also I hope someone could explain the difference when getting the perpetual license ?, thank you. |
Re: From 9 upgrade ?
Perhaps you are comparing perpetual and subscription?
A 1 year subscription is $299US, but that stops working at the end of a year. You can subscribe again (monthly or annually) as desired. The $599US perpetual license never expires, so you can continue to run the latest version provided during your Update Plan's term. |
Re: From 9 upgrade ?
I just checked my Avid store account and in 2014 I paid $199 for a perpetual upgrade from 9. So in 2019 $299 seems like a reasonable deal to me and I'm known to squeeze the buffalo dung out of a nickle.

Never expires, and provided during your Update Plan's term?. I guess I'm going to have to read more to grasp better. Please forgive me, can get a little confusing for me, since I haven't upgraded since 9. |

If say you bought the upgrade from 9 to 2019.5 today for $299 you would also get a upgrade/support plan for one year from today’s date (now I remember, when the support plan came along I had to pay an additional $99 on top of my initial $199, so basically same price today). With that support plan you will get any updates to Pro Tools free of charge for the next year and afterwards as long as you pay the annual upgrade/support fee of $99 each year (dealers sometimes have sales, I’ve got the 1 yr upgrade/support plan for the Vanilla PT as low as $78 before). If you don’t pay your upgrade/support fee, your Pro Tools license will freeze (but not expire) at the latest version available when your upgrade/support was last in effect. I have Pro Tools Ultimate, my annual upgrade/support plan is $399, so if you don’t need HD features, $299 is a heck of a deal on that upgrade. |
Re: From 9 upgrade ?
Thanks for the info Sugarnutz,
Okay so it all comes down to no matter what plan you purchase, everyone is essentially renting (CORRECT) ? Dave Ramsey insisted to never rent anything. But this is obviously is essential to a lot of music makers I guess. |

Subscription is a temporary license. With this, you can only run Pro Tools while your subscription is active. It's like renting (which is why it's less expensive than buying a new perpetual license) and you don't need a previous license to subscribe. Might be a better option if budget is a concern or if you have a short term need (e.g. 2 month project that requires 4 systems running simultaneously). Perpetual is a non-expiring license. This authorizes any versions released over the next 12 months. You can then renew to get another 12 months of releases, or let the Update Plan lapse and continue using your license to run any versions released up through your Plan's expiration date.

Re: From 9 upgrade ?
Thank you very much for the follow up.
Perpetual license is going to work, and make sense to me. :-) |
