Help me! I\'m slipping over to the dark side....
Is there a compelling reason to NOT get a PowerBook?
Since finding out that the Gateway laptop that I was going to get has been discontinued, I've been looking at other viable alternatives--including a 15" G4 PowerBook. I've looked at the Dell Inspiron 9300-Don't need, or want a 17" screen in a laptop. I've looked at the Inspiron 6000--attractive, and it's listed on the approved laptops page for MBox, but not for Digi 002/R (which I'm hoping to get some time soon). But, Dell is the white bread of the computer world; they're like Wal-Mart. I'm a student, so I need something for general studying and internet communication, as well as being a Protools system. I'm also a committed Linux user (if you didn't know that already), so whatever laptop I get will have a dual boot set up with Linux. There are versions of Linux, including Gentoo that will run on PPC architecture, including the PowerBooks. So, I think I'm looking at the Dell Inspiron 6000, or the 15" PowerBook. I'm not comfortable buying a refurbished system, especially since it looks as though Gateway is killing off the eMachines brand after their acquisition last year. Pros for getting a PowerBook: ----------------------------- It is fully compatible with Protools Can dual boot it to Linux--which admittedly has a coolness factor of 11 There are more plug-ins available for Mac Most recording studios use Mac--experience with Mac, Windows and Linux a big plus Once I get it set up, I'll have lots of experience networking Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X together Comes with Garage Band Can get Final Cut Express for $150 extra Cons for getting a PowerBook: ----------------------------- The damn things are ungodly expensive It runs Mac OS It's built by Apple It only has one button on the mouse pad Are there any other reasons, pro or con for getting a PowerBook? I was ready two days ago to get the Gateway 7426GX, but has since been discontinued. I now find myself standing on the verge of a cliff that I have avoided previously. I've gone, in the last twelve hours from not thinking at all about getting a Mac, to probably going to get one. help me.... |
