SSD partitioning: yes or no?
 
(Apologies if this has already been discussed here.)

I'm considering replacing my 3 WD black spinners with 2 Samsung 850's. For convenient housekeeping (boot drive images etc) I'd like to partition one of them. I've read a little bit about the pros & cons of SSD partitioning. If done correctly, can I (should I) partition one of them? Thanx!!!

I personally have not partitioned a drive in the last 8 yrs or so, don't feel there's a need.

I wouldn't run ProTools off a partition on a drive where the other partition is the boot drive, too much conflict reading data. But it's perfectly find to partition a drive that'll be dedicated to ProTools, so for instance, while you're using one partition, the other won't really be being used in the BG by some other app...

That said, I typically don't do it much anymore either. Aside from organization, there isn't really much benefit.

Remember, I'm talking about an SSD here. On another thread here somewhere, some say they are running everything (OS, PTools, VI Samples) all from ONE SSD.

I have run two partitions on SSD boot drives for many years with PT. No issues. It makes it easy to have two full speed OS or PT configurations for checking out new versions of either. Currently have 512G internal nMP drive with two partitions.

same as propower. i always alternate SSD boot partitions until a new system/pro tools version is proven to be rock solid and problem free.

never a single problem with partioning the SSD (samsung 500). i have tested both ways, and there is zero performance difference - partitioned or not.

I would not partition myself(just personal preference with SSD's). You could always simply use more SSD's that are smaller capacity:rolleyes:

I stuck to the basics, which is having a dedicated SSD for my boot disk and program executables, but my spin disks still storing all the samples and files.

I certainly wouldn't house files I work with on the same SSD drive I'm running everything off of, as, and I'm sure you read this, the less rewriting the better.

But as far as I know from the architecture of an SSD, there's not really a benefit to partitioning one unless you NEED to work off of the same SSD you boot from, and even then, it's a marginal advantage. And not one that Apple feels the need to do since they pre-install the OS on the same SSD as documents are stored (just giving you an example here).

Word to the wise too, if you are planning to go this route, make sure you're on top of the SSD's trim settings.

I have 3 partitions on my 256gb system drive (SSD) in my MP 6,1 each with a different variant of Mac OS and PT, I don't store audio/video or record to these partitions, they are purely system drives... never had any issues.

I also run a 256gb SSD in mp old MP 3,1 with 2 partitions, one for the mundane office type stuff and the other as my studio space, on the studio partition I run Logic & PT, all the Logic sample libraries and VI's are stored and installed on the studio system partition and any audio or video is stored/recorded to a seperate HDD spinner... this setup has been working perfectly for years.

As for Trim support, it's pretty much ONLY available with the HORRIBLY over priced Apple supplied SSD's (there are 3rd party utilities available) and is pretty much a non issue as long as you are not in the habit of constantly moving and erasing data on the SSD (remember, I'm only using them as system drives).

So, I say partition away :D

if OS partition is too small becomes a problem...
Minimum 100GB.

Windows7 needs/create a 100MB hidden partition.

is nice to have partitions, because you can be more organized...
but becomes annoying, when you have A: C: D: E: F: G: H: I: J: K: L: M: N: O: P: Q: R: S: T: U: V: W: X: Y: Z:

splitting a single 256GB,
vs. dual 128GB
splitting is better.


Temperature, Energy consumption, Speed...
