HDX with older Mac Pro
 

Ok...if this has been asked, I'm sorry. I've seen similar things but nothing that hits my specific details.

I've fallen into the sd2 (older session) trap and need to get the old sessions converted. I've tried "save copy in..." and selecting "convert audio files" but PT12 won't convert the files...it just saves a copy of the PT session file. I have a family of macs that I can use, but I've sold both of my HD3 TDM systems. I have a Mac Pro dual 1GB that was the second (I think) mac pro tower they came out with that has 10.7 on it. As far as OS, I should be good and my PT12 perpetual license includes PT10 on my ilok.

My question is that can I run PT10 on the HDX cards since I don't have either of my old core cards anymore. Any issues putting the HDX card in the older Mac Pro?

Huh? What *exactly* are you trying to do with SD2 sessions? If you just want to open/covert a session you may not need any Avid hardware connected, why not just start up Pro Tools HD (9 or later, 10 being the last that will support SD2) with Built-In Output selected as the Playback engine?

I have early 2000 sessions where sd2 was the norm that I can't access anymore. Some open with HDX but the audio files are all missing and some I can't even get to open. I would like to re-save the sessions so that I can open them with the current system.

My understanding is that if I just convert the audio files folder, Pro Tools won't know how to align the files in the session. If I go to PT10 and save a copy, PT will convert the sd2 files and keep them aligned in the session. Could have that wrong though.

You need a PTHD license to run a HDX card and if you dont have a HD license then thats anothet 1500-2499 USD.

I show "Pro Tools HD Perpetual Bundle (with 10/11/12+I/O)" on my ilok. When I expand it, it shows PT10 HD in the list. I think that's what I need, right?

I am not sure what version of HDX you are talking about etc. Some open with HDX running Pro Tools 10?... if so the ones that don’t are possibly corrupted. When did they last work? On the exact same storage device? Were they moved? How over what filesystems? You got other session archives?

AFAIK Pro Tools 10 was the last version that supported reading SDII files. You don’t need HD hardware or HD software or even any external interface to just open a session then save and do the conversion from SDII audio files. We are talking Mac only here of course.

Having mangled or corrupt SDII files, especially because of missing (edit) resource forks is super common, so the first thing you want to do is just confirm you can open your original sessions/audio files OK in Pro Tools 10 or earlier and/or check other backups/archives.

You have to pay attention to running Pro Tools 10 on a compatible OS release. That might require you do a full clean OS X install.
