"Tape" speed
 

I've been asked to archive reel-to-reel tapes originally recorded in the mid 60s. I'd like to use my 001 and Pro Tools LE to give them a good digital cleaning.

Problem is, many of the tapes were recorded at 3 3/4 speed. Is there anyway I can achieve 3 3/4 speed playback from within Pro Tools LE?

Speed has nothing to do w/pt
you need to play them at 3/, 3/4 ips on a reel to reel

new one probably won't go that slow, find an old one

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Pro Tools allows you to record and playback at half speed.

That said, I don't think a 3 3/4 ips reel-to-reel deck has been manufactured in the last X amount of years, which is why I posted my question here.

There must be some way to achieve the desired playback spped digitally.

If you're asking if you can play the 3 3/4 ips tapes on a faster playback deck and then correct the pitch in PT, the answer is "yes." You could digitally slow the tapes back to proper pitch. The problem is that with that extreme a speed correction, there would be an extreme amount of digital artifacts, and the quality of the recording after digital processing would be horrendous. So while it is possible, it's not practical.

If I understand you correctly, you are hoping that there is some plugin in PT that will allow you to dump the tracks in at the speed your deck is and then slow them down? There are plugs like Serato's Pitch'n Time, and Digi has their own plug for doing this but I'm not sure you would be happy with the end result as the file goes through some radical changes to get there. Pitch'n Time will sound better than the Digi plug, but still...

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Wow! Yes, that's exactly what I want to do! I want to thread reel-to-reel tape directly in to my Digi001 and somehow have it "magically" playback. You nailed it right on the head.

Condescension aside, I CLEARLY would like to DUB a reel-to-reel tape, recorded at 3 3/4 speed from a reel-to-reel deck running at 7.5 ips in to Pro Tools LE. At that stage, I would like to find a way to DIGITALLY playback the audio at the ORIGINALLY RECORDED 3 3/4 speed as I don't have access to a reel-to-reel which plays back audio at 3 3/4 speed.

Now how do I thread this tape through the XLR....?

You might wanna try the "Speed" plugin by wave mechanics, it's quite amazing and the simplest

You could probably find an old crappy one w/3/3/4 ips for less than some restoration plug's,and you wouldn't have any digital speed manipulation artifact's.
That slow of speed is going to be lo- lo- lo- fi, no matter what you do,IMO.
My old tube reel to reel's are some of my favorite pieces(not for pulling tape) I use them as quitar pre/amp, tube pre in recording chain,tube power(alot of old one's are powered [img]images/icons/tongue.gif[/img] )But you should try the double speed recording in pt and see if it's tolerable

I just checked the manual,
there is half speed recording(shift+spacebar)

Not double speed recording
but what about this(I need a light bulb graemlin [img]images/icons/rolleyes.gif[/img] )
bring in to pt(it's 2x's fast)
play at half (shift+spacebar)
record to stand alone recorder,
