Digi MIDI i/o Duplicated and greyed in Audio/Midi setup

This happens to me pretty frequently. My midi goes offline and in the AUDIO MIDI setup, my original MIDI i/o icon has been renamed Midi i/o 2 and greyed out. A second Midi i/o icon named midi i/o 1 is now present and can't be deleted. All I can do is delete the original one and redraw all my connections to it. And then restart. Pretty maddening. Any Fix for this? FYI i am using PT HD 7.4 cs5 on Intel Mac 4x 2.66 and MAC os X 10.4.11

Here you go. Just did it again this morning when adding IAC bus ports

I have a similar problem! I get the extra midi i/o devices showing up, but I can delete them. I don't have to reconnect everything. I do have to restart my computer to get my Motormix back online and my connection names. This happens often! I guess this is why it is discontinued!

Re: Digi MIDI i/o Duplicated and greyed in Audio/Midi setup

Try this:

Go to MacHD>Users>your account>Library>Preferences>By Host and trash 'com.apple.midi.a bunch of numbers and letters.plist'.

Go to MacHD>Users>your account>Library>Preferences and trash 'com.apple.audio.audiomidisetup.plist'.

Empty the trash and restart, then see if everything is working.

How do you have the MIDI IO connected - directly or through a hub? Are you using the PSU or USB power for it?

Digi,
I will trash my midi prefs tonight and see what happens. I am running the midi i/o in one of the usb ports on the back of my mac pro. I do not use the power supply but I have one. I believe that if I hit the reset button on the midi i/o it creates more devices as well. I will double check. Thanks.

Re: Digi MIDI i/o Duplicated and greyed in Audio/Midi setup

Nice call digi! The pref under "by host" I did not know about. Now I can hit reset without the duplicates showing up! And if it happens again I know what to do. :-) Maybe Jean-Charles Deshaies should add that to the "ProTools Pref and Database Helper"! I love that little app. :D

I spoke too soon! The fix did not last. I use Logic 8, Peak Pro 6, Ableton Live Suite 8 and Reason 4 as well as PTLE 8. Just to name the main apps! It is hard to track when this problem occurs because I switch apps allot. I will have to find my PSU and try that out. It's buried in one of my cable storage boxes!

That would definitely be the next step.

Is it becoming greyed out while the computer is on? If so, that would indicate a mis-communication or loss of communication on the USB bus - maybe due to a low power situation (which the PSU would help). Do you have a lot of other USB devices connected?

Re: Digi MIDI i/o Duplicated and greyed in Audio/Midi setup

I'm pretty sure it always happens with the computer on. Sometimes it happens on stuck notes when I have to hit reset in stand alone apps with no "all notes off". Yes I have my Local off! It has also happened when quitting PTLE prematurely because my ilok was not plugged in. I did find my PSU and it is wired up and I will see how it goes. As far as USB devices go I added a PCI express 4 port card connected to a Belkin ipod dock/4 port hub, two 20" Cinema displays where I plug my iloks in, and a APC XS 1500. On the rear USB ports of my Mac Pro I have the Digidesign Midi I/O, Apple keyboard with mighty mouse & Griffin Powermate attached, and a Wacom Intuos 2 tablet. On the front port I have a Axiom 25 controller. On the Belkin dock/hub I have a Epson RX580 printer/scanner, a Dymo labelwriter 400, Elgato EyeTV 250, Kensington LED keyboard light, and a USB extender for using my Powermate to trigger recording from my drum kit. I usually attach my flash drive on the second front port on my Mac. The short answer would have been Yes! :D

Re: Digi MIDI i/o Duplicated and greyed in Audio/Midi setup

It's good to see that I am not the only one having this problem.
Everybody I speak to from Digidesign or Apple have been saying that they have not see this before.
I have 2 x Digi I/O's and 1 MOTU 128 Express running on a MacPro 8 core intel with 16Gb of ram. Pro Tools 8 HD 2.
My digi Midi I/O's are always dropping out from the Apple AMS (Apple Midi Setup) program and putting new ones in.
Then I have to remap my Midi setup what a pain.
I have made a copy of my preference on my Midi devices so I can copy it back into the User/Library/Audio/MIDI Configurations.
This sometimes work but then my Midi I/O's are back there in grey, and again 2 new Midi I/O's have been created.
The funny thing is that my MOTU 128 is rock solid and always is there no drop outs.
I am starting to think because the Digi Midi I/O are only USB 1 there is the problem.
I have updated the firmware to version 2 like everybody tells you to do over and over again.
Also there might be something in the update to OS x 10.5.7 don't do it.
I never had this problem running my old Power Mac 10.4.x and Pro Tools 7.4.x
There seems to be alot about the USB not working on alot of devices running 10.5.7.
My Tascam DVRA1000HD has stopped mounting with the arrival of 10.5.7.
If I put it onto a machine running 10.5.5 or 10.5.6 all good.
Removing preferences dose nothing.
If any one comes up with a fix please let us know.
Aussie Mick

Have you tried trashing the prefs indicated above and/or using a power supply with the MIDI IO's?

I'd be interested to know if the PSU helps at all.

Have you tried connecting the MIDI IO to a different port? I wonder if having all those devices attached is messing with USB communication somehow...have you tried it with all unnecessary devices disconnected?

Re: Digi MIDI i/o Duplicated and greyed in Audio/Midi setup

There is differently a problem with OS X 10.5.7 running alot of USB devices.
I would say take your OS back to 10.5.5 or 10.5.6 this will no doubt fix your other USB devices such as printer.

Lets hope someone fixers the Digi Midi I/O

Re: Digi MIDI i/o Duplicated and greyed in Audio/Midi setup

The PSU does not help. :( I will try a different port and see if that helps. I will also unplug other USB devices as well. However, I have had this problem since I got this machine with Leopard. So it's not a new thing with OS recent updates. I have had no other USB issues at all. I believe that the problem occurs when I close apps that are using midi. At least it seems that way.

Re: Digi MIDI i/o Duplicated and greyed in Audio/Midi setup

Yes have gone one step furthere than trashing the preference.
I have put a new 500Gb drive in with a new stystem 10.5.5. and tried 10.5.6 as well.
I only loaded the Pro Tools 8 plus the cs8.3 software and my 2 Midi I/O's nothing else on my Mac.
I then went into AMS and sent my Midi I/O devices from scratch.
Restarted my MacPro and there it was, 1 of my Midi I/O's in grey and a new one put in it's place with no of me midi devices on it.
I own 2 Midi I/O's so I have been able to A B them. Nothing wrong with the devices and yes I have updated the firmware to version 2 in both Midi I/O's many times.
I have also striped my Mac down so there is no USB devices or any thing else hanging off it except my HD cards and my 192's with my Sync I/O interfaces.
I must piont out that I never had any trouble with my PowerMac running Pro Tools 7.4.x
We have played enough games now so we need to have this problem escalated to the code writers or tech heads.
Also I have a MOTU 128 express Midi device and it work every time.

Removing my other USB devices did not clear up the problem. I am currently testing different ports as I have many to test. No luck so far. I report back when I have tested all of them thoroughly.

Re: Digi MIDI i/o Duplicated and greyed in Audio/Midi setup

Ok. The story so fare 12/06/2009 8.34 pm Australia Time.

I have spend the day trying new things.
1) New Drive with a new OS X 10.5.5 and new install of Pro Tools 8 with cs8.0.3.
2) Rebuild my AMS Midi rig with 20 different Midi Devices.
3) Went into Pro Tools and made a new session with only one Midi track open nothing else no Audio tracks no Instrument tracks.
4) Selected each Midi device one by one using both my 2 Midi I/O's all good.
5) Tried open up various session and every time Pro Tools gets to the end of it's open up progress I lose one of the Midi I/O off line.
6) Made a new session and imported different session data from various sessions made in version 7.4 and version 8 with no Midi tracks in these session only Audio track. Then after the imports was complete bang go's the one of the Midi I/O off line.
I am starting to think that Digidesign has not wrote the code for using two or more Midi I/O's in version 8. I know that Digidesign qualifies that you can run 4 of the Midi I/O's together. Maybe they forgot that part in version 8.

Thanks for the path Aussie Mick. ;) I just used Time machine to get back my midi config! I don't know how but the AMS lost all my port settings! The only new gear I have used recently is one of those new Akia LPK25 controllers. I think the OS glitched out and erased my settings when I plugged it in! So look out everybody! As far as the Midi I/O is concerned, nothing has changed. Power supply makes no difference! Changing usb ports makes no difference! I don't entirely blame Digi for this issue, Apple is definitely on my _hit list tonight! A class compliant midi controller should not hose your midi config upon insertion. I hope Snow Leopard will be more stable.

Yes, all of them and more. Power supply or no power supply, used different USB ports, unplugged all USB devices and of course the trashing of the prefs. I gave up, it's easier to reboot and delete the duplicates than investigate anymore. I hope that when the Snow leopard compatible version is released, it will have a new Midi i/o driver included. And NO, I am not running SL yet! I am patiently waiting.

Re: Digi MIDI i/o Duplicated and greyed in Audio/Midi setup

Same problem here..... for several weeks now on two HD3 ver 8.0cs3 Mac Pro (2009) systems running on OS 10.5.8.

Ghost greyed out midi IO icon appears in the A/Midi setup, then midi input becomes erratic and the Midi IO eventually freezes.

I have tried all the possible solutions suggested in the thread to no avail.

Re: Digi MIDI i/o Duplicated and greyed in Audio/Midi setup

OK I hope I may be counting my chickens too soon but I looked at the USB devices in the system profiler and made sure that the Midi io was on its own bus. Apparently of the USB ports in the back of the machine are split into two buses, the left most one being on its own bus, the rightmost and center sharing one and the two in front share another. Putting the MIDI IO on a bus where it is the sole device is so far the answer. I also disconnected any unnecessary usb devices on the computer, so only keyboard, mouse and ilok and Midi IO are present. Perhaps this is an overrated power issue in the mac pro 4x2.66 USB bus? Or underrated MIDI IO Draw. Anyway 24 hours and holding. I was considering swapping for a MOTU Midi interface but will hold off a couple days to see if this fix holds. I did try all of the fixes mentioned in terms of deleting prefs. They did not work at all, Id get a duplicate within about 30 mins.

xxicjoy 11-17-2009 04:02 PM

Re: Digi MIDI i/o Duplicated and greyed in Audio/Midi setup

reporting back, has stayed online sucessfully. Midi IO must have a high current draw, put it on its own usb bus

I have the same problem and I solved it by using a new M-Audio Midi Interface!!!! I've connected a Midisport 4x4 and now I have no problems at all!!!! So I think there's a compatibility problem between the MIDI I/O and Mac OSX 10.5.8 or ProTools 8.0.1

Re: Digi MIDI i/o Duplicated and greyed in Audio/Midi setup

I too have had this problem across two or three different computers, USB ports and cards, PSU and preference trashing. Works for a while then goes bad again. It is obvious that the MIDI I/O needs a firmware update or redesign. It is silly to say that you need a PSU when the product doesn't ship with one. I think the only answer is to start using a new MIDI product as described above. But what do I do with the expensive Digidesign product? Maybe Digi should trade these across for an M-Audio product.

I'd like to know the answer to this too.
We bought 4 Midi IO's less than two years ago (running two on each rig) at a total cost of nearly $3000 retail
in Japan and they aren't working.

Can Digidesign respond to this problem ?

Let's freshen up! :D

Same here albeit with PT 8.0.4, 002R and MOTU MIDI Timepiece AV, a 10.5..8 system on a Mac Pro.

However, my primary studio is running a PT 7 HD, MTP AV, 10.4.11 on a Mac Pro WITH NO PROBLEMS in AMS!

Both MTPs are early USB models

Also my other studios, one with Emagic's AM8, the other with a 003R's MIDI hooked to an Edirol U1X, both on Mac Pros and 10.5 and 10.4, have no problems with AMS

Is there a cure for this out there?

Same problem here across PT7, PT8, firmware, preferences, power supply etc etc.

Just happened again in the middle of a session with a client - very embarrassing. Sometimes I can get it back fairly quickly, other times I might have to have several goes and it takes 1/2 hour or more.

I want to stick with the MIDI IO because of the time stamping, but I'm sorely traded to give in and go with a different model - surely this can be fixed - it looks like it has been know about for long enough - please don't leave us in it, Digi!

It's still doing it with PT9 and the new driver/firmware. I still have Zombie Midi I/Os filling up my AMS! You can kill them with the delete key but they just keep coming back. I guess the only way to get a head shot is by deleting the original MIDI I/O 1, thus ending the cycle.

Re: Digi MIDI i/o Duplicated and greyed in Audio/Midi setup

Many MIDI interfaces require a lithium battery so save their start up settings.
When the battery dies, every time you restart the Audio Midi Setup doesn't recognize the Midi interface from previous, so it creates another Midi Interface.

Not sure if this is the reason for some of you or not, but try replacing the lithium battery, you will have to physically open up your Midi Interface obviously.
