Is supposed to bring up the universe window right? On my system it's selecting all the edit tools. I've got the A...Z thingy turned on. Is there some other preference?

Try the 7 on the numeric keypad.

yep numeric keypad is the one - I guess I normally do that but for some reason today didn't.
