Automation Lock?

Why is there no way to lock automation by region in PT?

We've all hit "write to all" and blown over existing automation. A long time ago of course :D

There should be a way to lock/freeze automation by region or region group. Locking regions doesn't do it. Auto Safe only works for the whole track-- which would almost work if it was automatable.

Whaddya think?

even Auto Safe has flaws

Locking automation on regions and / or parts of timeline would be a major upgrade to the system.
I'm sure everyone had at least one experience where the automation was lost on channel after accidentally hitting the "write to all / start / end" button.
It would make working in "super sessions" much easier.
Please, don't let this thread die.

I think it boils down to fixing this:

http://protools.ideascale.com/a/dtd/...ack/95623-3779

So you don't write to the entire track when nothing is selected.

The Neve DFC has safety nets which allow you to automation protect between timecodes.

I would prefer this to region based, I don't like edit or time locking regions as it just gets in the way a lot of the time. Combining either Pro Tools markers to allow auto safe or TC safety nets which protect the parts of the film you aren't working on from automation writes surely can't take that much in terms of programming....that and make write to selection work only on the selection after you have engaged playback would be so beneficial. Please Avid.

It is so strange that in 3 years that idea got only 20 votes (including 2 today)

Yes, something like that. Like creating "safety zones", e.g. for reels.

I suppose the problem with ideascale is that the music lead ideas and bugs get much more attention because there are so many more users. Not because one bug or behaviour causes so much hassle to a small group of people.

I think the two votes were mine and yours Branko! I'm going to bump that other thread while it is annoying me again.

Another reason why it has so few votes is that people may experience the bug but not know what happened. For a while, my partner and I experienced this bug every once in a while, but didn't understand what had wiped out all our automation. You usually don't realize its happened until much later so it wasn't clear why it had been wiped out. Just thought it was some dreadful bug or something...

That isn't a bug, it's just the unintended consequences of ones actions.
