Mac OsX Extended Journaled Problem

I have a BIG problem with one of my FW external disks.
I have it formated OX X Extended Journaled and used it normally with FCP.
Yesterday I've just used it to make some modifications on Pro-tools session I've copied to, After I did the first bounce, it started crashing and suddenly the disk unmounted and never mounted again.
I've tried several softwares and they can see the disk but can't mount it nor do any kind of recovery.

What shall I do???

Thanks

Re: Mac OsX Extended Journaled Problem

Always turn journaling off if you are going to record to the drive with Pro Tools.

From the Answerbase:

Mac OS X 10.3 incorporates a journaled file system, which will automatically log and file modifications. If your computer crashes badly enough to require a restart (or a restart from a power failure), the OS will then use the Journal to aid in fixing any disk problems caused by the crash. Because any write to the disk will also incur a journal update, this will slightly slow down disk performance. Mac OS X 10.3 ships with Journaling on by default. Digidesign recommends that customers format their media drives with Journaling turned off. If you are using Apple's Disk Utility program to format drives, choose "Mac OS Extended" format, instead of "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)."
If you wish to turn off Journaling on you boot drive as well, perform the following steps:
1. Run the Apple Disk Utility.
2. In the main window, select the boot volume.
3. From the File menu, choose "Disable Journaling."
Note that this will slow recovery if your system has to be rebooted to recover from a kernel panic or power failure.

If it shows up in Disk Utility, you should be able to recover it with Disk Warrior, or Data Rescue X (or 9) to transfer your data off to another drive.

Re: Mac OsX Extended Journaled Problem

I've apparently found the problem!

The disk I was using probably has the so called Firewire Bug. So, basicly I'm...
I have to find a firmware update for it and pray!

Re: Mac OsX Extended Journaled Problem

The "firewire bug" was corrected in 10.3.1. Just remember that Digi hasn't approved the 10.3.5 version, so you'd better get the 10.3.4 combo installer, repair permissions, install 10.3.4 and repair permissions again.

Oh, and for external disks, stick to Non-Journaled, at least with ProTools.

If you have the heart for it, disassemble the firewire disk, install the hard drive inside the Mac tower and then see if the drive utilities (Diskwarrior, Norton, etc) can see the disk.

Re: Mac OsX Extended Journaled Problem

Ive had all sorts of weird voodoo with lacie D2 firewire400 drives. The first time norton repaired the wrapper. the second time diskwarrior could get some files back but DataRescue X got everything.

I still dont know what happened and I dont think LaCie or Apple have their act together on the firewire front, they dont have a definitive list of dos and donts

changing from OS9 to using OSX has been a nightmare

no such thing as beta testing it seems, just release it and let the public test it

just keep everything backed up on dvd and be ready for a crash - thats what Im thinking at the moment

be afraid, be very afraid, and dont get me started on Bush.......
