New AudioVision/Mediacomposer

Will the "new" 24-bit AudioVision be able to process 16-bit projects? I am currently using AudioVision with 24-bit 888 I/O's running at 16-bit. My concern stems from the fact that most audio imported via OMF is coming from Avid Mediacomposers running at 16-bit. And since more and more Mediacomposers are finally digitizing high quality audio into their systems, the OMF they generate will be useless if ProTools/24AV Avid AudioVision 2000 Mach II Revised can't process 16-bit audio. I hope this is not another example of Digidesign making AudioVision different and not better.

Re: New AudioVision/Mediacomposer

David,

I don't see 16 bit sessions, soundfiles or projects being a problem mainly due to the fact that CD's require a 16bit 44.1k sample rate.

Currently, Pro Tools/24 and Pro Tools Mix systems, which are 24 bit systems, also allow the creation of 16 bit soundfiles and sessions as well as opening 16 bit sessions/soundfiles created on earlier Pro Tools hardware/software.

Also, there are too many digital devices, such as DAT machines, in the world today that only support 16 bit sound files. Dropping 16 bit sound files would require that all or most digital devices in your studio be upgraded or replaced. Therefore,I don't see 16 bit file support being dropped any time soon.

Thanks,

Re: New AudioVision/Mediacomposer

Jon,

So the 16-bit files will open in a 24-bit session, not a 16-bit session correct? Additionally, what about sending master clips back to MediaComposer via OMF? Will the option exist to convert the word length down to 16-bits from 24?

Maybe someone out there is asking why I would want to do this... We layback to Digibeta masters in most of the work we do. Although the tape format allows for 20 bits, the AES/EBU input is 16 bit on a sony Digibeta deck.

So, while 24 bits will sound great in the mix, we now need a video format for mastering that will support it. *grin*

Re: New AudioVision/Mediacomposer

You cannot currently playback 16 bit files and 24 bit files in the same session.

You can dither the output of a 24bit session to 16 bits (or 20 for that matter) using one of several different plugins by Digidesign or one of Digi's Third party developers.

As far as the OMF situation, It is not currently possible to create an OMF file in Pro Tools. IF you need to get audio from Pro Tools to Media Composer, we recommend that you bounce each track down to one contiguous file in Pro Tools, import each into MC and spot them manually. It will be necessary to convert those files during the bounce process from 24 bit to 16 bit so that MC will be able to import them.
