Pro Tools 2020.12 M1 Mac Mini

Wanted to share my experiences after a week with my M1 Mini.

My Rig is
M1 Mac Mini 16/1 TB
Mac OS Big Sur 11.2.1
Pro Tools 2020.12
Logic Pro X 10.6
UA Apollo Twin MK II
Old Euphonix MC Mix and MC Transport.
Apple Magic Keyboard Space Grey
Apple Magic Trackpad.
Waves V12
Izotope RX 7
SSL Native plugs
UA Plugs
Addictive Drums 2
Addictive Keys
EZ Drummer 2
Steven Slate Drums 5
UVI Workstation/Synth Anthology
Metric Halo Plugs

So far it’s running like a champ. No audio of issues of any kind.
All of my old Intel sessions run great. Some 100 plus tracks.

One bug is that the adding a new track naming box is graphically cut off. No other graphic issue that I’ve found.
Another is a crash at start up when Kontakt/Komplete 13 starts to load. It locks up on the splash screen. Getting rid of the Kontakt solved the issue. Not a big deal for me. I’ll be using Kontakt in Logic Pro X. I just started using Kontakt/Komplete so I don’t have any existing PT sessions with it.

My old MC Mix has never worked better. It wasn’t this solid when I got it 11 years ago. It would always disconnect back then. It’s been rock solid this past week. Zero issues.

As far as my PT projects I picked up where I left off with my mid 2011 iMac 27 3.4ghz I7.

That's good news -- thanks for the info!

Unfortunately, Kontakt is mission-critical, so until it's compatible I'll have to continue waiting for the M1 bus.

I've read that this issue exist with Big Sur even on an Intel Mac. Therefore the M1 Mac mini is not the cause.

Other than that, thanks for the report. It is good to hear that it is mostly good news for those that are not impacted by the "mission critical" issues.

Yep happens to me on both Intel MBP and M1 MBP both running Big Sur... not a show stopper.

Right, no Kontakt is a total showstopper. Glad I read this since I'll admit I had a few thoughts about trying Big Sur on another drive.

Its seems as though the NI effects plugs that come with Komplete 13 are working in PT. Battery and Absynth FM8 are also available.

Even in Logic there are a few NI instruments that didn’t install on the M1. A attempt to reinstall prompts a message in Native Access that it detected a non x86 processor.

In the next few years or less when everything is Apple Silicon compliant it’s going to be bananas with these machines.

You are being very optimistic. Last time I bought last generation G5 PowerMac in 2005, and first Intel that was fully functional was the Nehalem model Mac Pro in 2009.

Speaking of OS, transition begun with Tiger (10.4), continued with Leopard (10.5) and ended with Snow Leopard (10.6) which dropped PPC code altogether.

Remains to be seen if this transition actually begun with Catalina (64-bit code only) or Big Sur (support for Apple Silicon), but there is still a long way to go until Intel code can be dropped.

It's different this time around, and in fact that's Apple's entire point -- they now have everything in-house, with the OS and major apps speaking directly to the M1, and they can usher this process along. I still have nightmares about the PPC to Intel migration and what our studios went through with flakey software wrappers, etc. I don't think this transition will resemble that.
