Ultimate 2019.10 on a mid-2010 MacPro yet?

While noticing with joy the Dot10 Update of Protools, I realized, while browsing the supported computers list, that Avid scratched support for Mid-2010 Xeon-Processor MacPros for paying the yearly upgrade fee. *arggghhhhhh*

Has anyone tried here against the odds and is willing to share experiences?

It only means they don't test against 9yr old computer anymore

I am running it on a 2009 flashed to a 2010 and am having no issues.
I pay no attention to the supported configurations, was running PT 8 HD on Mavericks for years with no issues.
Clone, try and if it works great, if not rollback.

I have bought the so called "mid-2010" (the year marks the construction and patent date) XEON-model brandnew in 2015.

Using two HDX-Cards the "trashcan"-MacPro-Model was no alternative, since it comes with no PCI-support and friends of mine have screamed '****e' all over with failing expansion-chassis including extremely loud fans and tiny cable adpaters.

On top of it I mixed a session with my mid-2010 specifications MacPro yesterday, which turned out to have over 100 audio tracks, while watching my 'old' XEON-CPU heading not over 9% of usage.

Now, which MacPro should I buy for my double HDX-configuration? The new MacPro 2019 model is not yet available for sale, extremely expensive and also not listed in the Avid compatibility list (yet).

Thanks for chiming in! :D And yes, I will do exactly this. No fear! :D

You just have to ask yourself: What are the dudes and dudettes at Avid thinking when "working" for their HDX customers?

Sure, new old stock comes up every now and there all the time. It is however reasonable that computers so long out of support are not tested. It does not mean PT won't work, just it isn't tested and therefore not supported.

Anything that was supported with Mojave/2019.5 should have no problem with Mojave/2019.10 because not much has changed compatibility-wise.

Re: Ultimate 2019.10 on a mid-2010 MacPro yet?

I'm running PT 2019.10 on an upgraded 2010 Mac Pro 5,1. There is no inherent difference in a 2010 5,1 and a 2012 5,1 other than the processor configurations that were available at the time.

So perhaps the only thing to concern yourself with is if your 2010 5,1 has a processor at least as fast as those listed for the 2012's. In my case I'm running a 12 core configuration that is faster than you could buy in 2012. A processor upgrade on a 5,1 is relatively cheap and simple to do.

Thanks for your suggestions!

Adventurous as I am I have installed PT Ultimate 2019.10 on my mid-2010 MacPro HDX-machine (OS 10.13.6) and it works like a charm. :D When having a session open with 10 Stereo tracks in 48KHz./32bits float with the Avid Channel Strip inserted in each channel and scroll like wild during playback, my CPU shows 1% of usage...

As it should.

Now since you are adventurous, why not upgrading your GPU to a Metal-compatible one and go for Mojave?
