iLok required to authorize Pro Tools HD 7 softwar

Got this from the press release section:

Customers may order either Pro Tools 7 Upgrade PLUS option online through the DigiStore or visit a local Authorized Digidesign Reseller. The Upgrade PLUS packages available at dealer locations include installation discs and full documentation — at no extra charge.

An iLok USB Smart Key (sold separately) and Internet access are required to authorize Pro Tools HD 7 software as well as the plug-ins for both Pro Tools HD 7 Upgrade PLUS and Pro Tools LE 7 Upgrade PLUS options. For more information about iLok, visit www.ilok.com.

Dors this mean a possibilty to run PT without hardware? Nah.......

Yeah, it looks like it is only for HD. I would be slightly annoyed if they did that for LE because I don't always want my iLok attached when using my PowerBook and Mbox but I always have it attached for HD.

No, it means that studios with 10 systems will have to purchase 10 upgrades instead of buying 1 and using the same auth code on all of them.

It also means that if your iLok does go down, you can not open up any session !

Too many people passing out upgrades and serial numbers on the internet.
It's just business - Don't blame Digi Put the blame where it counts.

If you owned a store and the kids down the lock kept stealing candy from your shelves. What would you do?

To all the people that would not pay for upgrades now is our chance to make ammends.

Hi,

Are you sure this isn't just for the "plus" version's that have the 2 ilok auth plugins included!!

Can anyone confirm that the ilok is needed for the PT software as well??

Bang goes my software factory in the garage

Even those people who bought a new system a little over a month ago and have to pay to upgrade already. I'm also sure that Digi isn't hurting from upgrades being copied. The damage from a bad ilok is certianly going to far outweigh that. It's one thing to be missing a few plugins, but to be locked out of the program alltogether, depsite having to pay tens of thousands for the hardware?

I think I'm gonna have to stick to 6.9 for as long as possible as it's jsut too risky to have to depend on ilok to launch PT. Part of the beauty of it being hardware based is you didn't have to worry about copy protection.
