Joemeek or 003 preams?

I have this Twin Joemeek for over a year. I tried it via SPDIF, now I record with it directly into 003.
I am really not satisfied with the results.
Is it possible that a 1000 usd pream is no better than 003's preams?

When you say "directly into 003", which input are you using? And di the SPDIF connection work for you?

The mic is a Røde K2. The general opinion is that this set-up is ok for a home studio. Still, the sound is not as good as I expected.
The extranoise is more than it should be.
Another extranoise (wich probably has nothing to to with question) is that when iTunes plays via AUX, ias really killing the pleasure of hearing music from iTunes.

But the main problem is how to use the Joemeek&mic with 003.

I have a K2 and am wondering if you might need a new tube for the mic. My mic got to where it was hissy and would occasionally pop. Bought a NOS tube from Dougstubes and it fixed it. BTW that is a pretty nice looking preamp. I might have to add it to my list of things to buy when I win the lottery. ;)

Oh and another this to check. When you are hooking the preamp up via SPDIF how are you setting the clock in your system? You'll either need to set up the Joe Meek as the master or use a Word Clock cable out of the 003 into the Joe Meek.

@CME> I have this K2 for one year, and used for 5-6, I'm not sure if the tube is already gone, but I'll order a new one. Thanks.
I stoped using the SPDIF after I've read about the convertors, and I felt I have better results just plug it into 003 .

Re: Joemeek or 003 preams?

I would go back to using SPDIF to see if it helps the noise at all. I would also try the mic plugged straight into input 1 to see if the Meek is making things better, worse or just more of the same. When using 7&8, did you set the level switch on the back of the 003 to the +4 position(that's the proper choice). I guess from reading, that the Meek is not a great preamp, but many like the "flavor" of it. There's a whole range of semi-cheap preamps that seem to get mixed reviews. Speaking of tubes, I put a NOS Mullard 12AT7 in my MXL V69 and that made a nice improvement. Does the Meek have any tubes in it? Maybe a change there might help too?

@ albee1952 < those are some great advices! I will try each and every step. I really don't think the 003 is with +4! I'll check it first tomorrow, when I'll get home after the gig. And all the other things.
Thank you! I really apreciate it.

The way I see in the pics is that if the switch it pressed in, you get -10, and if it's out, you get +4, right?

Re: Joemeek or 003 preams?

Since I can't remember(and am at home right now) just talk into the mic and try both positions. The position that is the LOWEST volume is the +4 setting. Adjust for overall level with the Meek knobs. Using the -10 position is more likely to be clipped by the +4 signal from the Meek(or any other external preamp for those bystanders).
