Reboot required to see Eleven Rack as an input/output device

Anyway to "activate" the drivers without rebooting?
I don't have to reboot to use the Editor but I have to reboot my Macbook to use 11R as a midi interface, it's not showing as an input/output device in OSX.

Let me guess. You do not have your Mac properly optimized for Pro Tools and it is sleeping, or you are manually sleeping it??? You can't do that with Avid drivers.

Is this when powering up the ER with the Mac already booted? Which specific MacBook model? I saw this consistently with an older Core 2 Duo iMac but not with my iMac i5 or Mac Mini i7.

Re: Reboot required to see Eleven Rack as an input/output device

I'm not even using Protools, just to see Eleven Rack drivers as input/output devices in System Preferences.
Yes exactly, my Mac is sleeping. Or I use my Mac and I want to use my Eleven Rack to record some ideas in Garageband. I fire-up 11R and nothing in System Preferences. I have to reboot then it's working, until my Mac sleeps again...

Any script/command in Terminal to load or wakeup the driver without rebooting?
There's a daemon starting at boot time, can we stop/start that daemon?

Yes working exactly as expected, unfortunately this is missed when folks don’t use Pro Tools... lots of Avid drivers behave this way so disabling sleep is a standard systems optimization for Pro Tools. It’s working as badly as designed. It’s the driver that hangs. You can disconnect the Eleven Rack before sleeping or just never sleep.

You _might_ be able to force the hung driver to unload with kextunload. You would have to try it.

Re: Reboot required to see Eleven Rack as an input/output device

I always disconnect my Eleven Rack before sleeping, I will try to turn if off before unplugging.
I'm using a MacBook so this computer is used way more than just as audio tasks. It's running for weeks on sleep/wakeup cycles.
Never add this problem with my Digi001 on my G4 Mac :D. But it was a dedicated computer only running Protools.

kextunload is not working because it's used by other instances. Anyway will have to go Headrush sooner or later...
Thanks, a lot for your help Darryl

I suspect it's not unloading because it's just hung and confused. But you want to try exiting all apps that may have the device open before trying. Sorry I don't have any Avid interface here to test with...

Pity there is no force function that kills processes with the device open. I've often wanted that :-)

Still curious about your MacBook model. I currently have an ER on my old Mac Mini i7 and the ER comes up in System Prefs and AMS after Sleep or when powering up with the Mac booted.

Re: Reboot required to see Eleven Rack as an input/output device

I have an old Macbook pro, around 2010, but still going very well for what I'm using it for. Is it possible that your 11R is always connected to you Macbook? I tried 2-3 sleep/wakeup cycles and it was working if I let it connected. Also 2-3 cycles of start 11R/start Macbook/shutoff 11R/start 11R while still connected. It seems to loose/hang overtime.
