Re: Mics sm81
hey.
SM81's. good for overheads, ST acoustic guitar, perc. instruments, HH, i've even heard them used on piano too. a decent, relatively cheap mic. I'm not sure about the SM81LC, never seen that. could be something stupid like it has an on/off switch but that is totally a guess. why are they STILL so popular? most of the best mics are not new designs, in fact a lot are pretty ancient. takecare |
Re: Mics sm81
81's are a good overall small diaphram condensor. They can take a decent beating and not crap out, have a fairly good sound (I'd rate them a 7 in a 1-10 scale) and everyones got a few. In fact I have a pair I'll sell ya if you want. See our post on the Buy and Sell page.

Re: Mics sm81
Good mic, I own one. Flat responce and fairly low noise. BTW, the LC stands for 'less cable' meaning it doesn't come with a mic cable.

Re: Mics sm81
yes, I highly recommend the SM81 over the SM81LC. The SM81LC has been reported to have a problem getting high enough gain to the preamp.

Re: Mics sm81
I'm thinking of buying a pair of SM81's.
Could anyone advise how well they work as a pair of overheads for a drum kit in both live and studio situations? |
Re: Mics sm81
SM-81's are used regularly as overheads live. In the studio, there are better choices, but they would be ok for a demo or project facility.

Re: Mics sm81
I've got a pair of 81's. They're great for overheads in the studios if it's all you can afford AND you've got good pre's for them. I used to just use the pre's on an O1V and they sounded like digital hell.

Re: Mics sm81
SM-81 ands SM81LC are the same mic. As previously posted the LC does not come with a cable.

Re: Mics sm81
I noticed that Dave Weckl uses a pair of SM81's as drum kit overheads and a single one for hi-hat both live and in the studio.
For those of you who don't know who Dave Weckl is, he is one of the most highly rated drummers around today. He also puts them through a Yamaha O1V. |
