Digidesign has the Command8 which you know will always be compatible. Mackie has the HUI I think and there are a couple of others - all around the same price. Some better some worse but the compatability issue for me is the key.

Faders and knobs on the new Command 8 are very smooth! Turned and turned them yesterday at the G.C. Very nice feel!

For the price of an 002R + Command 8, you could have a ONE-PIECE, 002!

Re: digital desk for 002R

but who wants a one piece if you can get TWO!

Re: digital desk for 002R

Two pieces are advantageous if you upgrade the 002R to its replacement, you still have the Command8 that will work. If the command8 needs repairs, you still have the 002R. You can also stick the 002R in a rack and have it all vabled instaed of having to bring all the cables to your desktop where the 002 is sitting.

Besides, I have the 002R so I need to justify why I didn't buy an 002

I went with the 002r and ended up getting a great deal on Mackie Control for 650.00. Just a thought The fader are smoother then the 002's control surface and dont feel or look like plastic. Command 8 seems to be pretty sweet but cannot be used with any other programs like the mackie control. Flying Faders are definately cool, and potential clients get hooked once they see the faders moving.

Peace Eddie

Eddie - from the Command|8 page:
Quote:

Its Standalone MIDI controller mode enables you to use Command|8 with your favorite third-party MIDI applications and devices — any device or application that accepts MIDI control change messages for level, panning, solo, mute, MIDI Machine Control, and other mappable parameters.

Re: digital desk for 002R

actually the command 8 can be used with other programs (probley not to well though) as it can be a stand alone MIDI controller
Mackie Control in HUI mode?
wouldnt go for it because no longer officially supported and the current support will drop away
im happy with my 002 - and the faders are great, long and 10bit resolution
if you go for anything aother than a digi control surface i would prob go for the Tascam US-2400
Quote:

Twenty-five touch sensitive 100mm moving faders, each with 10-bit resolution

25 faders and not a great deal more than a command 8 (although these prices can be a bit odd sometimes)
but again it uses HUI mode
the software/hardware intergration with digi control surfaces leaves anything else for dead
but whatever works (untill you discover nothing but digi works in PT 7 )
