Can somebody help me understand the entire scenario if I dont upgrade to 12 b4 2017?

Just vaguely skimmed an article on my phone (so I may have misinterpreted) and it gave me the impression that if I dont upgrade to 12 before 2017 that the 'grace period' is over and if I ever want to upgrade from 11 to 12 after Jan 1st I will have to outright buy 12 for $800?

But if I do it before Jan 1st its $199? (I also remember hearing about a sale somewhere where it might be 99 right now?)

Bottom line - Pretend I know nothing about the new plan and explain to me what my scenario and options are if I do/dont upgrade from 11 to 12 before/after Jan 1st? I really don't need to upgrade, as far as I know 12 adds nothing for me but if it means the difference between 90 dollars or 900 dollars later I might have to reconsider my options.

currently Running 11.3.1 on OSx 10.9.5. Ive never upgraded my OSx since I bought the mac in 2013.. if I WERE to goto 12 would you guys also suggest an OS upgrade while im at it?

If you do not currently have Pro Tools, it will cost $899 if you want to buy Pro Tools outright and not use the subscription model. This is about $200 more than what it costs to start with Pro Tools 11 right now but includes one year of updates and service.
In January 2016, the "grace period" to upgrade to 12 from a version you currently own at the $199 upgrade amount ends. If you want to buy it outright after that, you have to pay the $899 amount.
This is the part that hurts the most: If you buy into the new "Pay For a Year Outright" model, you are stuck in a spot where you have to pay $199 each year in order to stay current and avoid paying $899 to buy it outright again whenever it expires (if you choose to do so in the future) or being forced onto a subscription model.

Thats really im all concerned with TBH.

If its just going to be 299 or something to upgrade later then ill wait since I dont need 12 but 800 is a bit a jump from 99..Im going to try looking for that article I read

Although 99 bucks for the next 2 years does seem like the best way to go regardless.

That is correct. You need to buy AND activate a plan before 31st December 2016 to get the extra year.

So if i am on a plan today, I am not eligeble for this deal but if my plan has lapsed before the 31st of dec 2016 I am elogeble right?

Here it says this offer is only for people who have a lapsed plan, not people with a plan who wanna buy imto another year and get a free year.

Buy A Pro Tools 12 Reinstatement Plan And Get An Extra Year Of Upgrades
The Avid Pro Tools upgrade plan is normally $99 per year for Pro Tools Native but if you allow your upgrade plan to lapse or you have never bought into an upgrade plan then you have to buy what Avid call a Reinstatement Plan to get you into the current version of Pro Tools. For Pro Tools Native the price for this is $299 and for that you get the latest version of Pro Tools, currently 12.6.1, and free upgrades for one year.

Just wanted to be clear about who this deal is for ;)

Chris, this is what is stated in the Avid Store:

Special offer: Reinstate or purchase a new upgrade plan by December 31, 2016 and not only will you get the latest version of Pro Tools with one year of upgrades included, we’ll throw in an extra year of upgrades at no additional charge—a $99 value!

So, reinstate OR purchase a new upgrade plan, and you'll get the extra year as part of the deal.

Exactly, so of someone is on a plan now they can NOT take part in this right?
