Update Plan Renewal doubled in price

I have an automatically renewable subscription to ProTools, and this year I couldn't help but noticing that the price had more than doubled from €105 to €217, 80. Why wasn't I given any prior notice about this hefty price increase? What's the reason for it? What will the price be next year?
Could this be a mistake? I have the order reference number from AVID, if somebody up there can answer my questions.

Re: subscription renewal doubled in price

I just contacted two professional studios in Orlando FL to mix one of my tracks. These are the two best studios in the city. One of the studios uses PT12 and the other studio uses Cubase. Neither studio pays a subscription. Although Avid won't admit it, (my opinion) I think they've failed with the subscription model. They need to go back to the old way of doing business if they ever want to get people back on their ecosystem. Just wait till they drop all new hardware. How many people are going to buy their new Omni, I/O, HDX replacement while having to pay for their subscription? I think Avid will be seeing interesting financial times in a couple of years, if not already.

Obviously the subscription model won't help, but these days only the most demanding users benefit from buying extra DSP hardware. With track freeze and current CPU's, a large number of users have no need to add extra DSP, or will do so using UAD, etc. Given that the Avid DSP strictly uses proprietary AAX-DSP plugins, with a limited number available, that business model will be less and less profitable.

Good find on the renewals. Your link on regular PT is to a boxed version that has shipping charges. They do have an electronic delivery version no shipping also.

Dean,
Exactly right. If only Avid would read this board. But I honestly don't think they do. If I was the CEO of Avid, part of my day (when I'm not thinking of ways to spend my $5M+ salary) would be spent reading this board. Nothing better than getting unfiltered feedback from your customers. Being surrounded by yes men is how the CEO of Avid got into this predicament in the first place. They are moving further and further away from being profitable for the long term. 10 years from now, Avid will be nothing but a small player in the audio ecosystem, unless they radically change the way they approach their business model. UA gets it. Apogee gets it. Most of the DAW companies get it, but Avid continues to put their heads in the sand. No one is going to buy an HDX replacement. Once their hardware is obsolete most of us will move on. Sad, considering Pro Tools is a great DAW, just not worth the cost of keeping current with the subscription.

Man I haven't been on here in years. I just checked and it looks like my subscription expired in 2015 haha. Anyway I got an email from Avid about reinstatement plans. I kind of chuckled and thought I'd check in here. Thought maybe, just maybe, they'd seen the light and were offering some fantastic deal to come back (although I knew better). Good to see they're still doing things backwards. Sadly PT is a side business for avid anymore. They really just want your money. And if they don't get it, they don't care. The video side will keep them afloat for a long time.

CME,
Sadly you are right. It's a shame really. Like I already said, Pro Tools is a great DAW. In my opinion, the best out there. But the future doesn't look bright with Avid at the helm.

To me the saddest part is how long it’s been this way. Signs were there and things started going downhill probably at least a decade ago. Trust me they’ve had more than ample opportunity to turn things around. It’s not happening. At least not imo. Feel free to think different.
