feet to millisecond conversion?
 

I have a free stereo mic that I would like to place in my surrounds and was wondering if anyone new the conversion from feet to milliseconds? I could just earball it but I know the distance is 60feet so I thought I'd place it correctly. Thanks

sound travels approximately 1 foot per millisecond. If you are 10 feet from your speakers, it will take about 10 milliseconds for the sound to reach you.

Cliffy Nailed it...that's the general approximation.

Most studios keep the place at 74 degrees Fahrenheit...which makes the speed of sound 1133.9676290463692 ft/sec. So the approximation is a little bit off, and that can pose some small issues when you're dealing with large distances.

An easy way to improve the accuracy of that approximation is to add one extra millisecond for every 8 feet, and if it's a really big distance, another millisecond or two on top of that after you add it all up. (Can be helpful with orchestral recording in a large venue and getting the room mics to sound right...you'd need to nudge the room mics earlier in time to make it sound right if aiming for an accurate representation of what it would sound like if seated in the theater.)

Thanks very much Chris...yes that is what I'm going for, a realistic 20th row center type of thing.
I'll nudge around to get the best effect but wanted to know where 'reality' was.

Bryan, classical production from the viewpoint of an audience member is where time aligning tracks can be quite helpful. A quick shortcut for you:

Power up your system, hit record, then walk to the conductors position and give one really loud clap. You can then use that clap to time align everything...adding an extra millisecond or three to the spot mics for more effect.

No measuring or calculations needed.

Hey Chris, I did that once for a choral concert that I was recording, and I heard a guy in the back say "What the hell is he clapping for, did I miss something ?"
