Stopping playback cancels selection

Does anyone know why my selections disappear when I press stop?
It's bugging the hell out of me and I can't find any info on it...

That happens when you have "insertion follows playback" on. Toggle it with the N key... or there's a button for it under your pencil tool.

I find that if I have keyboard focus on, and I usually do, I very frequently press the N key by accident when using the spacebar to start or stop playback.
