5-6 second delay when initiating record

Hello,

I have a problem with a 5-6 second delay when I press record.
The Sandra report is below.
Had been running PT 2018.4 on Windows 7 Pro with no problems.
A few days ago I upgraded to Windows 10 Pro and updated to PT 2019.12.
Now whenever I initiate [record] on the transport, there is this 5-6 second delay. There is no delay if I initiate [play]
Pre count is off. I also tested by re-installing 2018.4 but the problem remained. I have done the optimizations for Window 10. I also removed all third party plug ins and VIs but the delay remained'
Has any one else experienced this?
I was going to limit the record time but I see that option is no longer available in the preferences section.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Sandra report:

Re: 5-6 second delay when initiating record

Well, I'm far from the last word on this but I see a few things that concern me:
1-Did you install 2019.12 over the previous version, or did you uninstall the previous version(with an OS change, I would uninstall the old version)
2-what drive are you recording to? If its G:, that drive is too slow
3-mis-matched RAM might be an issue(especially depending on which slots they are installed). Ideally, all RAM are the exact same brand and part number.
4-have you checked to make sure Count Off is disabled?
5-what interface? Are your USB or Firewire drivers up to date?
6-try disabling the wifi
7-how much free space is on your recording drive? Try to never fill it more than 75-80%
That's all I have as I moved to intel years ago:o

Re: 5-6 second delay when initiating record

Thank you very much for your comprehensive reply!

I have uninstalled all the items available in the standard uninstall procedure - not just the program and drivers - and fresh installed 2019.12.

I am recording to the D drive which is not quite at 50% capacity (it's a 1TB drive)

The ram was never an issue with 2018.4 and Windows7 but Windows 10 may cause a different reaction.

Count off is disabled. At least on the transport. If there is a deeper way to disable could you advise how?

I AM using a Digi002 rack and I have the latest driver for that. Yes, I know it's old and not the best but it has always worked flawlessly up through 2018.4 (the version I used prior to updating to 2019.12).

Wifi is disabled in the network settings.

Yet the delay remains.

Again, your time responding is much appreciated.
Kent

Re: 5-6 second delay when initiating record

This will not be a system issue, things like drives you are recording to etc. Or Sandra report or hardware etc. will not be relevant (but appreciate you providing that info) it much more likely to be some mystery setting in Pro Tools or your session or a bug there. If it is hardware you will get much worse behavior.

What happens if you trash prefs, and try starting with a new empty session?

One way to get delays on recording is to have wait on midi enabled and then have MIDI data coming in that you may not realize, that gets the transport moving... that will only wait in record.

Re: 5-6 second delay when initiating record

Hi Darryl.

Thanks for the reply!
I have indeed trashed preferences several times during the processes of deleting and loading PT through the troubleshooting procedures I have tried.

Also have tried fresh sessions (plus older sessions in which there was no previous record lag). They now exhibit the lag.

"Wait on MIDI" is off but has no effect other than the normal "Wait on MIDI" functionality.

I guess I'll just accept it as the new normal. It doesn't seem to affect the record quality.

Still puzzling though.

Thanks again.
Kent

Re: 5-6 second delay when initiating record

Try moving all .aaxplugin files out of the plugin folder, trash prefs and try again with just the default plugins. Hard to see how, but anything is possible, and you seem to not be removing plugins when you rolled back Pro Tools.

Re: 5-6 second delay when initiating record

Thanks for the recommendation. Earlier I did move all 3rd party plug ins to the ununsed folder but I did not try removing all. I will give this a try (plus trashing prefs again). I will create a new session then to see how just one track responds and, if successful, load the plug ins back in incrementally to determine a cause for the existing record delay.
You input is much appreciated.

... it's a long shot/stab in the dark.

What does your transport show during that pause time?

Re: 5-6 second delay when initiating record

When I click on Record, the Record button turns Red immediately. I then press play and the system freezes for 5-6 seconds. Then the Play button turns green and recording starts. When I press stop, the stop button turns blue and the system freezes for about 6 seconds. After it unfreezes, the system responds normally.

Thanks
Kent

Re: 5-6 second delay when initiating record

I tried moving ALL plug ins to the unused folder. I trashed the prefs.
I then re-opened PT 2019.12 and created one track plus a master fader.
The delay still remains. But it was a good try :-)
