Will this work? Electronic Drums with EZDrummer
 

Hello!
My question is regarding electric drums and EZdrums. So my drummer has an electric set and a midi cabel. My current audio interface don't have a midi in so I'll have to buy a new one. I think I'll buy a Focusrite Scarlett. So I wonder if I connect the electric drums via a midi cable to the interface, will it pick up the drums correctly in EZdrums when using a midi track?

Midi does not carry audio, no. You'll need to patch the audio outputs from the drum box to your interface inputs.

If you are asking about sending MIDI only, and not audio, then yes EZDrummer will see the incoming MIDI data and respond accordingly.

Yeah that's what I was wondering. That if EZDrummer will match all the pads on the kit with it's software and assign the keys accordingly in the midi track in PT.

So just to make it clear. If I connect the electric kit via an midi cable to my audio interface, EZDrummer will assign the pads to their proper location eg;snare etc Then when recording the drums it will lay out the proper keys in the midi track?

It is likely that you will need to set up a MIDI map as not all kits and VIs use the same default map.

You don't necessarily need to change your entire audio interface just to get MIDI.

You could add a simple MIDI interface to your system for about $40.

M-Audio make some simple inexpensive interfaces too for about the same price.

I went thru this acouple of years ago, matching midi out from a Alesis DM10 to EZDrummer sets. Most assignments match, but some don't. As I recall, I used the EZD manual to find that I could edit midi assignments and save custom midi maps right in EZDrummer. (I could be confusing it with Addictive Drums, but I don't think so.)

Also, doesn't this e-drums box have a USB-out? I bet it does, and you don't need a midi-interface at all.

I'm not sure but I think that's what my drummer has, but how would PT/EZD detect it if I just run it through a usb port on my computer?

Indeed^^^^ If the drum "brain" has a USB out, that will likely work. If you are happy with your current interface, there is no need to change it. While I used to have the M-Audio UNO, it failed to work with Win7. I replaced it with a MOTU Fastlane USB and it still works fine(even on Windows 10).

As for assigning sounds, its simply a matter of setting each trigger pad to play the appropriate midi note. With my old Roland TD-10 kit, most everything worked fine right out of the box. I had to do some "fishing" to get a side stick and cowbell, but the rest was good to go:o
