Will the new AAX plugs be supported in other daw's?

Having purchased Rtas plugins, and being a multi daw user,I've always felt they needed to be accepted in other daws, but never we're for obvious reasons.. Avid would never allow it..

So with the new format, will it be accepted now into other daws, for multi daw users? Or will it be the same restriction , only to be used in pro tools?

I don't think it's about it being a restriction. Its up to other DAWs to code for plugin formats... but other than Avid owned/designed plugs, there are very few out there these days that are exclusive to one format. Aside from that, it's a big undertaking to switch plugin formats entirely. Avid's doing it out of necessity, but I can't see Apple using anything other than AU, or Steinberg using anything other than VST. Most DAWs choose a format and stick with it.

Sorry, that's incorrect. Avid does not allow RTAS plugs to be coded in any host other than those owned by Avid. I don't see any reason why AAX would change that.

Cakewalk actually had a license for RTAS plugins but it seems to be on the manufacturing side for their plugins (Rapture v1.2.1 for instance was vst, rtas and dxi).. I wonder why they didn't use the license to add the rtas to their daw since they were making plugins in it's format for resell. But that would probably had required a different license with a whole new cost level to it.

As I said, they can't add them to their DAW, because Avid doesn't allow that.

I would assume AAX would follow like TDM and RTAS - only in protools and the installer asks what versions you need installed for other DAWS.

Right the comments here are definitely what's common knowledge up unto this point as far as rtas goes.I'd like for Avid to comment on this,so we can have a clear answer.

I know for a fact that certain daws would indeed support them ,if Avid would allow it.So the question is still on the table, will the AAX format work in other daws? Will an Avid rep please comment on this?

AFAIK this was true for RTAS, but not TDM.

At one point you could use TDM plugins in Logic, not sure if this is still true, but it's noteworthy:

http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/log..._tdm_guide.pdf

So it could be possible, assuming AVID allows it, to have AAX DSP in other hosts... which would be very cool.

Avid will allow AAX in other daws just after hell freezes over, or the sun has a supernova. Whichever comes first..
But to be sure Avid has no conscience about using other company's hard earned software plug ins on their platform
